San Clemente (; Spanish for "St. Clement") is a city in Orange County, California. It is a popular tourist destination in Southern California, known for its beaches, Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, and hospitality industry. San Clemente's city slogan is "Spanish Village by the Sea".Prior to colonization by Spaniards, the area was inhabited by the Acjachemen people. In 1969, President Richard Nixon bought part of the H. H. Cotton estate, one of the original homes built by one of Hanson's partners. It was nicknamed the "Western White House," a term for a vacation home that sits above one of California's premier surfing spots, San Onofre. The property has historical ties to the Democratic side of the aisle prior to Nixon's tenure; H.H. Cotton was known to host Franklin D. Roosevelt during his tenure as president. The city was officially incorporated as a city on February 27, 1928, with a council-manager government. It has a population of 64,293, according to the 2010 census. It sits roughly midway between Los Angeles and San Diego, California, and is located in the Orange Coast region of the South Coast of California, which is home to the San Diego County Fair and the Orange County Museum of Arts and Sciences. The pier, first constructed in 1928 and rebuilt in 1939 and 1983, is the city's most iconic landmark. The town's name comes from San Clementi Island, which was named by Sebastián Vizcaino in 1602 after Saint Clement.

History

San Clemente was founded in 1928 by former Mayor of Seattle Ole Hanson. The city was named after San Clemente Island, which was named by the explorer Sebastián Vizcaino in 1602 after Saint Clement. In 1969, President Richard Nixon bought part of the H. H. Cotton estate and called it "La Casa Pacifica," a term for a President's vacation home. It sits above one of the West Coast's premier surfing spots, Trestles, and just north of historic surfing beach San Onofre. The historic "North Beach" area is home to the Ole Hanson Beach Club, which were renovated in 2010 and 2016 and were reopened in 2016. It is also home to San Clementes Casino, which opened in 2010. The town is located on the banks of the Santa Catalina River, which flows into the San Diego River. The San Diego County Board of Supervisors is responsible for the city's finances, which are overseen by a Board of Adjustment. The City Council is made up of seven members, three of whom serve a four-year term. The mayor of the city is a former mayor of Seattle, Ole Hanson, who moved to the area in 1925 to develop the city. He named the city after the island he named after, which in turn was named for Saint Clement, the patron of the Knights of the Round Table. He built public structures such as the Beach Club and the community center, the pier and San ClementE Plaza, now called Max Berg Plaza Park.

Geography

San Clemente is located at 33°2616N 117°3713W (33.437828, 117.620397). To the south of town are Camp Pendleton and Trestles surf beach. San Clemente has a Mediterranean climate where temperatures tend to average in the 70s °F (20s °C) The annual rainfall in 2010 was 10.5 inches (270 mm) and the annual days of sunshine 310.7 (10.4 days) The city has an area of 19.5 square miles (51 km²) of which 18.7 square miles of it is land and 0.8 sq miles (2.1 km²), or 3.89% is water. The city is located in the Central Coast region of California and is part of the San Diego-Paramount Metropolitan Statistical Area. It has a population of 2,827 (3.1% of the U.S. population), or 1.2% of its total population (1.3% in 2010). It is located on the eastern edge of the Cozumel Peninsula, which is the largest peninsula in the state. It is the site of one of the most popular beaches in the United States, with the other being Catalina Island. It also has a number of national parks, including Catalina National Park, which was founded in 1869. The town is home to the San Francisco Giants baseball team, which won the World Series in 1966 and 1968.

Demographics

The 2010 United States Census reported San Clemente had a population of 63,522. There were 25,966 housing units at an average density of 1,333.8 per square mile (515.0/km²), of which 15,309 (64.0%) were owner-occupied, and 8,597 (36.0) were occupied by renters. As of the 2010 census, there were 68,763 people and 25,514 housing units in the city. Ninety percent of the city's adult population is a high school grad, and 5.5% of the population are considered below the poverty line. The median household income for the city as of 2017 was $101,43 per capita, and the home value was $500,133. The city is located on the coast of the Santa Catalina Islands. The town is located in the eastern portion of Orange County. It is located near the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, and is on the northern edge of the San Diego County coast. The San Diego River runs through the city, and runs through a portion of the town. The Baja Peninsula is a major tourist destination, with many beaches and beaches. The community is also known as the "Cerebral Coast" because of its proximity to the Santa Ana River, which runs along the coast. It was the site of the first U.S. Air Force base in the 1940s and has been home to the Air Force Reserve since.

Economy

Known as the Spanish Village by the Sea, San Clemente has long been known for its Spanish Colonial Revival style architecture. Many people work as civilian employees at the USMC Base Camp Pendelton which is just over the San Diego County line. The largest employers in the city are: Cameron Health, ICU Medical, Pick Up Stix, Rainbow Sandals, and Stance Socks. The city is a popular tourist destination, owing to its beaches, historic architecture, and attractions. It is home to the San Clementi Beach trail, which goes 2.6 miles out along the beaches of the city. The town is also home to Casa Romantica, a cultural center that is open to rent for private events like weddings and overlooks the city's coastline.

Sports

San Clemente is known for its many surfing locations, which include Trestles, Lowers, Middles & Uppers, Cotton's Point, Calafia Beach Park, Riviera, Lasuens (most often called Lost Winds), The Hole, T-Street, The Pier, Linda Lane, 204, North Beach and Poche Beach. It is also home to Surfing Magazine, The Surfer's Journal, and Longboard Magazine. The city has a large concentration of surfboard shapers and manufacturers. Numerous world-renowned surfers were raised in San Clemente or took up long-term residence in town, including Kolohe Andino, Shane Beschen, Mike Parsons (originally from Laguna Beach). San Clementi High School has won 6 out of 7 most recent NSSA national surfing titles. The town is located on the San Diego-Orange County line, about 30 miles north of Los Angeles. It has a population of about 4,000 people, and is home to a number of surfing hot spots, including Trestle Beach, The Hole and The Pier. It also has one of the largest surfboard manufacturing facilities in the U.S., with more than 1,000 pieces of surf board in production. It was founded in the 1950s and has a history of producing longboard and longboard parts. The San Diego area has a long history of surfing success, particularly in the 1960s and '70s. The area is also known for being a popular destination for surfers.

Education

The city is served by Capistrano Unified School District. Within the city, there are six elementary schools, three middle schools, and one high school. There is also one virtual public K-12 school:Capistrano Connections Academy. The elementary schools are: Truman Benedict, Concordia Elementary, Vista Del Mar, Las Palmas, Marblehead Elementary, and Lobo Elementary. The middle schools are Bernice Ayer, Shorecliffs, and Vista del Mar. San Clemente High School has an IB (International Baccalaureate) Program and a large number of AP (advanced placement) courses. The high school has hosted groups ranging from national title winning dance teams to award-winning orchestras, bands, voice groups and one of the nation's most skilled athletic programs. These groups have also received opportunities to perform at various venues including Carnegie Hall (madrigals and orchestra), various venues in Hawaii (marching band), and many others. The city is also home to the San Francisco Giants, San Francisco 49ers, San Diego 49ers and the San Diego Padres. It is home to a number of colleges and universities, including the University of California at San Diego and the California Institute of Technology. It also has the National Museum of Natural History, the California Museum of Nature and Science, and the Museum of American History and Culture, which is located in downtown San Francisco. It was founded in 1883. It has been named one of America's oldest cities in the 20th century.

Government and politics

As of February 10, 2019, San Clemente has 40,105 registered voters. Of those, 17,791 are registered Republicans, 9,926 are registered Democrats, and 10,309 have declined to state a political party. The city voted in favor of Proposition 8 by 55.5% and for Proposition 4 by 52.2%. Gene W James, elected by the people of San Clemente to City Council in 2019, was appointed Mayor of the city as of December 1, 2021. The California DMV has a field office in San Clemente. The location administers permit tests, behind-the-wheel tests, and various types of documentation. It was one of only five cities in Orange County that backed Donald J. Trump with majorities of its vote in both 2016 and 2020. It is in California's 49th congressional district, represented by Democrat Mike Levin. In the California State Legislature, it is in the 36th Senate District and the 73rd Assembly District. It has no Democratic nominee winning the city in over four decades. It also has no Republican nominee in the U.S. House of Representatives in the last 40 years. It is in California’s 49th district, which is represented by Republican Janet Nguyen. It's in the California's 73rd district, where Republican Laurie Davies is in charge of the state Assembly. The City Council has a resolution to make San Clementi as a Second Amendment Freedom City in June 2021. It will be one of the first cities in California to do so.

Transportation

The Foothill Transportation Corridor (SR 241) had proposed to connect Mission Viejo to the Orange/San Diego county line, running along the east side of San Clemente and through San Onofre State Beach. The California Coastal Commission rejected this proposal 82. Reasons cited for rejection included: the road's alignment through a state park, endangered species habitat, and a Native American archaeological site. Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner and Metrolink's Orange County Line and Inland Empire-Orange County Line between Los Angeles and San Diego provide beachside service in the city. In 2016, the city began offering residents free trolley service. The trolley is available Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. The funding for the trolley came from a $1.2 million grant from the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) which the city applied for. The grant will cover most of the costs for the service for seven years. The city will have to fund a portion of the trolleys at $146,000 over the seven-year grant period. The Friends of the San Clemente Beaches, Parks & Recreation Foundation provided a donation of $10,000 towards the funding of the capital costs of the Trolley. The Trolley service provides three open-air (windowless) trolley that cruise throughout the coastal areas of town and pick people up at designated stops every 15 minutes. The City has two stations: San Clementi station and San Clemento Pier station.
