Hobe Sound is an unincorporated area and census-designated place (CDP) in Martin County, Florida, United States. The population was 13,163 at the 2020 census. It stretches along the coast between Port Salerno and Jonathan Dickinson State Park and includes Jupiter Island. It is home to Hobe Sound Public Beach, one of Martin County's four guarded beaches. President Bill Clinton fell on the steps and twisted his knee at golfer Greg Norman's 80-acre oceanside estate in Hobesound in 1997. HobeSound is the anglicized form of the name of a village of the Jaega, a Native American group that lived in the area before European settlement. The Spanish recorded the village name as Jobe or Jove [xoe]. In 1924, the building which soon would become the new schoolhouse was constructed. In October of that year, the Olympia School opened. The school was designated the "Picture City School" of. Martin County. It remained in use as a school until 1962. Geography

Hobe Sound is the primary city name, but also Jupiter Island, Jupiter Isle are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Hobe Sound, Florida. Hobe Sound is an exurban area in southern Martin County near the Atlantic Ocean. It stretches along the coast between Port Salerno and Jonathan Dickinson State Park and includes Jupiter Island. It is home to Hobe Sound Public Beach, one of Martin County's four guarded beaches. The area is located at 27°0436N 80°0831W and is located 25 miles north of West Palm Beach. It has a population of about 2,000. HobeSound Public Beach is located on Jupiter Island, which is part of the Hobesound peninsula. The beach is one of the four beaches in Martin County and is guarded by a guard of life. The Atlantic Ocean is approximately 25 miles to the north of the area. It lies in the same general area as Palm Beach, Florida, and is known as the "Gateway to the Atlantic" because of its proximity to the ocean. The sound is also known as "The Sound" due to its location on the Florida coast. It also has a reputation for being a popular destination for surfers and beach goers. It was founded in the early 1900s and was named after Hobe Island, a small, uninhabited island off the coast of the Florida Keys. The Sound was named for the nearby town of Hobe, which was once a popular surfing destination. It's also known for its beautiful beaches, including Hobe Beach, which can be seen from the Atlantic. The town has a history of hosting major sporting events, including the World Series of Poker.

History

Hobe Sound is the anglicized form of the name of a village of the Jaega, a Native American group that lived in the area before European settlement. The Spanish recorded the village name as Jobe or Jove [xoe]. For a brief time Hobe Sound was renamed "Picture City" and plans were presented for a movie picture production center. President Bill Clinton fell on the steps and twisted his knee at golfer Greg Norman's 80-acre oceanside estate on March 14, 1997. The community's proximity to the coast affords immediate access to the Atlantic Ocean and the deep-channeled Intracoastal Waterway, a 1,200-mile (1,900 km) water route that provides a sheltered passage for boats along the eastern seaboard. It has been stated that at Hobe sound's front door lies the Gold Coast and that at her back door lie the Treasure Coast. The town is located at the southern end of environmentally-sensitive Martin (named after Governor Martin) County, Florida. The Martin County Sheriff's Department provides modern fire, rescue, as well as EMS Services. State-of-the-art inter-facility EMS services are also provided by the Martin Health System System System, which includes the Martin County Fire Rescue Department and the Florida Department of Public Health. HobeSound is a predominantly wealthy community whose residents have included such celebrities and other prominent persons as "Tiger" Woods, Alan Jackson, Celine Dion, Burt Reynolds, and Marion Margery Scranton.

Hobe Sound has been part of the following counties:Mosquito County, now Orange County. Brevard County was known as St. Lucie County from 1844-1855, but it was not the same county as today's St.Lucie County. Dade County was part of Hobe Sound from 1866-1909. Palm Beach County was a part of Brevard from 1909-1925. Martin County was in Brevard between 1925-1955. The present day Brevard is part of Florida's 67th cirque northeastern county. The county was once part of South Florida from 1821-1824 to 1824-1844. It was then part of St. Johns County until 1821. It then became part of Orange County before becoming Brevard in 1824. It is now part of St. Lucie County, which was formed in 1855. It has a population of about 2,000. The area was once called Hobe Sound and has been known as "Hobbes Sound" or "Hobbes Sound" for most of its history. The current name of the county is "Brevard County" and it was formed from Brevard and South Florida in 1844. The name Brevard changed to "Hobe sound" in 1866, and to "Beverly Sound" in 1866. In 1855, Brevard became "St. Lakes County" with the addition of the city of Hove Sound.

As of the 2020 U.S. census, there were 13,163 people, 6,079 households, and 3,397 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,082.8 persons per square mile (804.5/km²) There were 6,042 housing units at an average density of 1,106.2 houses per squaremile (427.3/ km²) The racial makeup of the C DP was 91.98% White, 5.79% African American, 0.15% Native American,0.60% Asian, 0,03% Pacific Islander, 0, 64% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. The median income for a household in theCDP was $36,541, and the median income. for a family was $45,412. About 3.7% of families and 5.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3. 7% of those under age 18 and 6.0% ofThose age 65 or over. The CDP has a population of 11,376 people, with 5,176 households. The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was2.66. The per capita income for the CPD was $21,603. It is the most densely populated city in the state, with 6,000 people living in it. It has a median age of 51 years, with 16.8% under the age of 18.

Transportation

There are no interstate highways in Hobe Sound; the nearest, Interstate 95, is 7 miles (11 km) west. US 1 arguably represents the central business district though some commercial activity occurs on Dixie Highway (A1A) The Florida East Coast Railway runs through HobeSound parallel to A1A. The closest Tri-Rail commuter railroad station is located in Mangonia Park to the south. There are plans to extend the high-speed Brightline rail system and add a station in Stuart to the north. The nearest airport offering commercial service is Palm Beach International Airport, which is primarily used for general aviation. Hobe sound is located on MARTY bus route 4 and route 20x, and connects with Palm Tran bus service. The Community Coach, a service of the Council on Aging of Martin County, is an additional public transportation service for Martin County. It operates a curb-to-curb, advance reservation, shared ride service and also operates fixed-route services in other parts of the county. Until 1963 long distance trains, East Coast Champion, City of Miami, Havana Special and South Wind, served Hope Sound's station. Until 1957 the Dixieland, (nee Dixie Flagler) made stops there as well. The historic West Palm Beach station is also served by Tri-rail, and is the closest Amtrak stop to Hobesound. The next closest airport is Witham Field, which offers general aviation service. It is also located in Stuart.

Education

Hobe Sound Bible College is the only institution that provides post-secondary education within Hobe Sound. Public schools include Murray Middle School and South Fork High School. The Pine School is a prestigious private school with a college preparatory program and educational opportunities for Kindergarten through 12th grade students. Private schools include the Hobe sound Christian Academy. The HobeSound Christian Academy is a private Christian school for boys and girls. The campus offers education covering the basic arts (graphics, music, and media). It is located on the former site of St. Michael's Independent, which is now located on its new campus in Hobesound. The school has a program for men and women who want to pursue a career in the arts. It is also a private school for women and children. It has a school for girls and boys who wish to pursue their dream of becoming a nurse or midwife. It also offers education for women who would like to become nurses or midwives. It was founded in the 1970s and is located in the heart of the town. The Christian school is now a private, Christian, day school for young women and girls, with a curriculum that focuses on the Bible and Christian values. It opened its doors in the fall of 1998. It currently has a campus in the center of the city, with an enrollment of more than 1,000 students. It offers a variety of programs, including music, art, graphic arts, and music. It's located on a former site that was once the home of the St.Michael's Independent School.
