Key Largo is a census-designated place in Monroe County, Florida, United States. It is located on the island of Key Largo in the upper Florida Keys. The name comes from the Spanish Cayo Largo, or "long key" It is both the first island and town of the Florida Keys to be reached from the Overseas Highway to Key West. The first undersea park in the United States, established in 1963, stretches three miles into the Atlantic Ocean and is 25 miles long. In popular culture, the 1981 hit "Smooth Operator" by Sade references the city rather than the city itself. The city is not the namesake of the city of the same name, which is located in New York City, New York, and was named after the city's first post office, which opened in 1841. The town is located at 25°624N 80°2548W (25.106637, -80.429917) The U.S. Census Bureau says the CDP has a total area of 39.6 km² (15.3 mi2), of which 31.5km² (12.2 mi2) is land and 8.1 km². 20.54% of the area is water, according to the Köppen climate classification. The CDP's population was 12,447 at the 2020 census, with 8,043 housing units at an average density of 255.6/km 2 (661.9/mi2).

The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary covers 178 square nautical miles. Both areas were designed to protect marine life, including the extensive coral reefs in the area.According to the Köppen climate classification, Key Largo has a tropical monsoon climate (Am). The CDP is located in the Florida Keys, which are part of the Florida National Seaboard, which is part of Florida  and the United Southeastern Mississippi, which is part of the Florida Interior, including the state of Florida and the State of Louisiana. The town has a population of 3,857. It is located on the eastern tip of El Radabob Key, just south of Rattlesnake Key. The cape is the east endpoint of the longest distance between any two points of land within the fifty states of the United States, as measured via Google Earth. The other endpoint is at the tip of a spit of sand on Green Island, Hawaii, 5,858.46 miles away.

There were 8,043 housing units at an average density of 255.6/km² (661.9/mi2) The average household size was 2.26, and the average family size was2.75. The median income for a household was $42,577, and $50,755 for a family. The per capita income was $25,441. About 5.9% of families and 8.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.7% of those under age 18 and 7.8% ofThose age 65 or over. The population was spread out, with 19.7%. under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 28.7. from 25 to 44, 30.3%. from 45 to 64, and 15.8%. who were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females age 18 or over, there are 107.6 males. The average age of a person in the community is 43.5 years. The CDP has a population density of 377.7/. km² (978.1/.mi2). It has a median income of $33,588. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the population will reach 12,400 by the end of the next census in 2026.


The Monroe County School District operates the Key Largo School. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Miami formerly operated the Saint Justin Martyr, Academy of Marine Science (PK-9) school. The school is part of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools system. It is located on the Florida Keys, in the town of Largo, Florida. It has a population of about 2,000 people. It was founded in the early 1900s as a fishing resort. The town is home to a number of theme parks and other tourist attractions, including the Florida Panhandle Museum of Natural History and the Florida Center for the Marine Arts. It also has a marina, which was built in the 1930s. It opened in the 1950s as the first marine science school. It closed in the 1970s. The Key Largos are home to the Florida National Guard and the U.S. Coast Guard, which has a base on the island. It reopened in the 1980s as part of a military base in Key Llarges, Florida, and has a military academy. It now has a high school, which opened in 1998. The 1948 film Key Largo, starring Edward G. Robinson, Lauren Bacall, and Humphrey Bogart, was set in the city. The 1981 hit single "Key Largo" by Bertie Higgins was inspired by the film, not the namesake city. Conversely, the 1984 single "Smooth Operator" by Sade references the city, rather than the film. The song "Kokomo" by the Beach Boys also references KeyLargo. The city is also the setting for the film "The Godfather: Part II," starring Tom Hanks. The film was released in 1948, and the movie was a box office success. The movie was based on the novel "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" by William Goldman. The book was published by Simon & Schuster in 1950, and was adapted into the film in 1951. The novel was a critical and box-office success, but the film was never made into a TV series. The sequel, "The Second Best Exorcism," was released on September 14, 1951. It was the first film to be released in the U.S. since "The Great Escape" (1949) and was directed by Robert Mitchum. The second film was "The Third Exorcist" (1950), which was also directed by Mitchum, and featured the first appearance of John Huston. The third and fourth films in the series were "The Sixth Extravagant" (1951) and "The Seventh Extravaganza" (1953 and 1954).
