Buford is a city in Gwinnett and Hall counties in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 17,144. The city was named after Algernon Sidney Buford, who was president of the Atlanta and Richmond Air-Line Railway during the railroad's construction. In the late 1800s and early 1900s the city became widely known for its leather production, becoming prominently associated with the leather industry and earning the nickname "The Leather City" The city operates its own school district and has been the birthplace and home of several musicians and athletes. Various tourist locations, including museums and community centers, the largest mall in the state ofGeorgia, the Mall of Georgia, and Lake Lanier Islands are in the Bufords region. The area was originally part of Cherokee territory and was largely inhabited by the Cherokee until the 1830s. The first non-Native Americans moved to the Buzord area in the late 1820s or early 1830s, although the Bozord area was not largely settled by them until the 1860s. Buzard is located in the heart of Georgia's Piedmont region, which is home to the Georgia Museum of Natural History and the Georgia State Museum of Art. The Buzards live in an area known as the "Leather City" because of the city's leather industry, which began with a harness shop and tannery in 1868. The town began rapidly expanding around the railway after its completion in 1871, and it was incorporated as the Town of Bufor on August 24, 1872, and renamed the City of Buzar in 1896.

History

Buford is the primary city name, but also Rest Haven, Sugar Hill are acceptable city names or spellings, Sugarhill on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Buford, Georgia. Buford is a city in Gwinnett County, Georgia. It was named after Algernon Sidney Buford, president of the Atlanta and Richmond Air-Line Railway during its construction. The city became known for its leather industry, earning it the nickname "The Leather City" The Bona Allen Company made saddles, collars, bridles, and shoes in the city. Many Hollywood actors used saddles made by the company, including Gene Autry, the cast of Bonanza, and Roy Rogers, who used a saddle on his horse Trigger. The company closed in 1981 after a fire and was later sold to the Tandy Corporation, which closed the tannery in 1945 and closed the shoe factory in 1942. In 2003 Tannery Row became home to the TanneryRow Artist Colony, which houses galleries and studios for artists. The town was originally part of Cherokee territory, but was largely settled by non-Native Americans by the 1860s. It is now the site of the Georgia State Fair. The Bufords are known as one of the best-known golf courses in the United States, with courses dating back to the 18th century. The golf course is located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River, which runs through the center of the town. It has been named after a former member of the tribe, who lived in the area in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The area is also known as the birthplace of singer-songwriter Hank Williams.

Geography

Buford is located in northern Gwinnett County in northern Georgia, with a small portion extending north into Hall County. The city is a suburb within the Atlanta metropolitan area. Buford's city limits are 4.5 miles (7.2 km) west of the Eastern Continental Divide. Demographics

As of the 2010 U.S. census, Buford had a population of 12,225. The racial and ethnic composition of the population was 65.8% white, 13.8%, black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.9% Asian, 14.7% reporting some other race and 2.5% reporting two or more races. As of the 2020 United States census, there were 17,144 people, 5,003 households, and 3,607 families residing in the city. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.35. The median age was 35.1 years, and there were 5,973 males and 6,252 females. The per capita income for the city was $19,905. About 18.1% of families and 23.0% of the city were below the poverty line, including 33.2% of those under age 18 and 13. 8% of people aged 65 or over. The city's median income for a household was $42,546, and the medianincome for a family was $44,797. 25.5 per cent of the town's population was Hispanic or Latino of any race. The city is located on the Mississippi River, which runs through the center of the state. The Mississippi River is a tributary of the Red River. The Red River flows through the city and into the Mississippi. The river is a major waterway.

Economy

In 2008, CNN Money ranked Buford as number 3 in its annual "100 best places to live and start a business" list. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the town's economy was centered on both its location as a railway stop and its leather industry. By the 1980s, these industries were no longer a viable part of the economy. According to the U.S. Census's American Community Survey 2007-2011 5-year estimate, around 65% of the population that are 16 years or older are in the labor force. Of these, around 59% are employed, and 6% are unemployed. The power tool manufacturer Makita operates a factory in Bufords with 400 employees. The North American division of Takeuchi Manufacturing was located in Bufford from 1999 until 2006, when the company moved to a larger facility in Pendergrass, Georgia. The town is located in Gwinnett County, Georgia, and is located on the Georgia-Tennessee border. It has a population of around 2,000 people, according to the 2007 census. The City of Buford is governed by a city commission government headed by a Commission Chairman. The area inside Gwinnett County is part of Georgia's 7th congressional district while the Hall County portions belong to Georgia's 9th district. The city is also part of the Georgia State Senate's 45th and 49th districts, and the 97th, 98th, and 103rd districts for the Georgia House of Representatives. Phillip Beard has served as Bufords Commission Chairman since 1975. The town was incorporated in 1872 and the city was renamed in 1896. In 1937, the city commission was replaced with a mayor and six councilmen. The current commission government was established on December 24, 1937, when a new city charter was approved. The mayor and councilmen governed the city until the city council was re-established in 1937. The commission government has been in charge of the city since 1937 and the mayor and city council have been out of the picture since the end of the Second World War. The city has a population of about 2,000 people. It is located in the heart of the Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Atlanta, Phenix City, Cobb, and Forsyth counties, and parts of Forsyth and Lumpkin counties. The City is in Georgia's 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th congressional districts.

Education

The Buford City School District operates three elementary schools and two high schools. Gwinnett County Public Schools operate schools for residents that live outside of the city limits. The BufORD-Sugar Hill Branch of the Gwinnet County Public Library is located in Bufords. The city of Bufards is located on the Georgia Turnpike. The turnpike runs through the city of Atlanta and connects to the Atlanta International Airport. The Atlanta International Mall is in the city and is a major tourist attraction. The town is also home to the Georgia Museum of Natural History, which was established in 1881. It is located at the center of the Atlanta metropolitan area and is part of the National Gallery of Art, which is also based in the town. The Georgia TurnPitch is also located in the area, and is known as one of the oldest public art museums in the United States. It was founded in 1883 and was the first public art museum in the state of Georgia. The museum was later expanded to include a museum of African-American history and culture, which opened in 1885. The Gwinnetts County Museum is also in the community. It opened in 1886 and is the oldest museum in Georgia, as well as the second oldest public library in the U.S. It dates back to the 17th century. The first public school was opened in the 18th century and was called the Georgia Academy of Arts and Crafts. The current school district was formed in 1887.

Arts and culture

The Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center is a museum and cultural center in Buford, Georgia. The Chesser-Williams House, a historic home which is believed to predate the 1850s, was moved to the museum to become part of the museum's cultural exhibits. The Bufords Community Center has a museum, 290-seat stage theatre, an outdoor amphitheater, and several spaces for meetings, banquets, and weddings. The center was created to educate children about both water and environmental resources as well as Gwinnet's cultural heritage, including the county's Cherokee and Creek cultures. It was completed in August 2006 and is located across the street from Buf Bord City Hall. It is a multi-purpose facility that was complete in 2012. It has a Museum, a theatre, and an outdoor Amphitheater. It has been described as a "museum for the 21st century" with a focus on science, technology, engineering, and math. It also has a theatre for children, a library, and a theater for adults. The museum is open to the public, and the community center is open for the public to use. It opened in 2006 and was completed on August 1, 2006. The community center has been completed in 2012 and is across the road from the city hall. It includes a theatre and a theatre.
