Glendale Heights

Glendale Heights is a village in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. Per the 2020 census, the population was 33,176. The town was originally named Glendale as it was between Glen Ellyn and Bloomingdale, but after a conflict arose with the small town of Glendale in Southern Illinois, the city decided in March 1960 to add the term Heights, in reference to its different topographies. Since then, the Hispanic community within Glendale heights has rapidly grown. In 2011, 22.1% of residents were Asian, making it the Chicago suburb with the highest percentage of Asians. According to the 2010 census, Glendale Heights has a total area of 5.51 square miles (14.27 km²) (or 97.46%) is land and 0.14 sq miles (0.36 km²), (or 2.54%) is water. The median household income was $56,285 and the median family income was $64,115. The per capita income for the village was $21,911. The average household size was 2.94 and the average family size was 3.54. There are three school districts: K-8, 15, 16 and 41. All of these districts feed into Glenbard Township, where there are three schools. Over the past decade, the percentage of Caucasian residents had decreased from 8.6% to 11.1%. The percentage of Hispanic, African American, and Asian residents had increased since 2000.

History

Glendale Heights is the primary city name, but also Glendale Hts are acceptable city names or spellings. Glendale Heights was a small farming area served by the Glen Ellyn post office up until the 1950s, with a population of just 104 in 1959. Midland Enterprises started building houses in Glendale Heights in 1958. On June 16, 1959, a petition was filed and on July 13, the village became incorporated. The town was originally named Glendale as it was between Glen Elly and Bloomingdale, but after a conflict arose with the small town of Glendale in Southern Illinois, the city decided in March 1960 to add the term Heights, in reference to its different topographies, a difference of about 100 feet because of its location straddling the Valparaiso Morraine. The first election was held later on that summer on August 2. The city was incorporated in 1959 and the name was changed in 1960. The name was later changed again to Glendale and the city is now known as Glendale, Illinois. It is located on the Illinois River between the towns of Bloomingdale and Glen Ellyln. It was originally called Glendale because it was located between the two towns, but was renamed in 1960 because of the difference of 100 feet between the topographies of the two places. The village is now part of the city of Chicago, Illinois, and was once known as "Glendale-Bloomingdale" It is now a suburb of Chicago and is home to the Chicago Cubs baseball team. It has been home to a number of professional sports teams, including the Chicago Bulls, Chicago Blackhawks, Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, Chicago White Sox and Chicago Blackhawks.

Geography

Glendale Heights is located at 41°5513N 88°444W (41.920228, 88.078918).According to the 2010 census, Glendale Heights has a total area of 5.51 square miles (14.27 km²) (or 97.46%) of which 5.37square miles (13.91km²) is land and 0.14square miles ("0.36km²") (or 2.54%) is water. The city has a population of 2,816. The town is located in the San Francisco Bay Area and the San Diego metropolitan area. It is the home of the NFL's San Diego 49ers and the NBA's Golden State Warriors. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has a training facility in the town. The community is home to the U.N. Peace Corps, which has a mission to promote peace and harmony in the region. It also has a community college, the University of California, San Diego, and a community health center. It has a post-secondary school, the College of Arts and Sciences, which was founded in 1883. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in the late 1940s and early 1950s. In the 1960s and 1970s, the city was the location of the California State College of the Arts, which had a campus that opened in the 1970s and 1980s. The current school district was formed in 1978.

Demographics

At the 2000 census there were 31,765 people, 10,791 households, and 7,596 families living in the village. The median household income was $56,285 and the median family income was $64,115. In 2011, 22.1% of Glendale Heights's residents were Asian, making it the Chicago suburb with the fourth highest percentage of Asians. As of 2018, the percentage of Hispanic, African American, and Asian residents had increased since 2000. The percentage of Caucasian residents had decreased. Over the same period, the Median household income went up from 56,285 to 62,763 and the percentage people living under the poverty line increased from 8.6% to 11.1%. The per capita income for the village was $21,911. This table excludes Latinos from the racial categories and assigns them to a separate category. Hispanics/Latinos can be of any race. The US Census treats Hispanic/Latino as an ethnic category. The 2020 census will report on the population of the village for the first time. The population is expected to reach 62,000 by the end of the year. The village is located on the Chicago River, which runs through the heart of the city. It is located in the South Side of Chicago, near the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Chicago Medical Center. The city is home to the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, and Chicago Bears. The Chicago Cubs are one of the most popular sports teams in the U.S.

Schools

Glendale Heights has three school districts, 15, 16 and 41. All of these districts are K-8 and feed into Glenbard Township district 87. There is only one library district, the Glenside Public Library District. Students that live in Glendale Heights within the boundaries of District 41 attend Abraham Lincoln. Students from District 16 are split between Glenbard North and Glenbard West for high school. The district's name sake school, Queen Bee, is no longer used as an elementary school. It is still standing on Bloomingdale Road and used for other purposes. The school district has four elementary schools, G. Stanley Hall School, Winnebago School, Blackhawk School, and Charles G. Reskin School. The middle school, Marquardt, is the district's school, and has a separate building for the sixth grade students, and another for 7th and 8th grade students. The high school, Glenbard East High School, is located in the middle of the district. It serves parts of Carol Stream, Glendale. Heights, Glen Ellyn, Lombard and Wheaton. It has a Bloomingdale address, but sits very close to the Glendale heights border. It also has a Blackhawk address, and sits very near to the Bloomingdale border. The students from District 15 live in parts of Addison, southern section of Bloomingdale, unincorporated Lombard, and the northern part of Glen. Ellyn Countryside. The elementary schools in District 41 are Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Churchill and Forest Glen.
