Manchester is a city in Delaware Township, Delaware County, Iowa, United States. The population was 5,065 at the time of the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Delaware County. The county courthouse was built in 1894 for $38,000. The clock in the tower was paid for with contributions from 700 county citizens. The main body of the building measures 76 by 100 feet. The tower and spire are 135 feet (41 m) high. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981 as a part of the County Courthouses in Iowa Thematic Resource. The community is located along the Maquoketa River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.70 square miles (12.17 km²), of which 4.68 square miles [12.12 km²] is land and 0.02 square miles (0.05 km²) is water. The city is located at the intersection of U.S. Route 20 and State Highway 13, and is the largest community in Delaware County and the largest city in Iowa. The median age in the city was 41.1 years, with 24.9% of residents were under the age of 18; 7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 22.8% were from 25 to 44; 25.2% are from 45 to 64; and 20.1% were 65 years of age or older. As of the census of 2010, there were 5,179 people, 2,199 households, and 1,391 families living in theCity.
History
The county courthouse was built in 1894 for $38,000. The clock in the tower was paid for with contributions from 700 county citizens. C.E. Bell designed the Romanesque Revival building. The main body of the building measures 76 by 100 feet. The tower and spire are 135 feet (41 m) high. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981 as a part of the County Courthouses in Iowa Thematic Resource. The decorative metal ceilings on the first floor and the elaborate woodwork are original to the building. It is located in the town of Manchester, Iowa, which was founded in the 1850s. The name of the town was originally Burrington after its founder, Levings Burrington, who settled there in 1852. It has a population of 2,000, with the majority of its residents living in the city of Manchester. The city is located on the Iowa River, which runs through the center of the city. The county courthouse is located near the city's downtown area, which is known as the "City of Manchester" It is the only county courthouse in the state to have been built in the late 19th century. The building was designed by C. E. Bell, who also designed the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines. Manchester completed the construction phase of a Whitewater Park in spring 2015 and opened the park on June 20, 2015. Delaware County is also home to Backbone State Park, Iowa's first state park and remains as one of the most geographically unique. Manchester & Delaware County resides over 35 Parks that cover 2,000+ acres. The Manchester Family Aquatic Center features 3 water slides, diving board, zero depth entry, spray fountains, sand volleyball and concessions. Manchester is home to the Manchester Trout Hatchery, which dates back to the 1890s. The facility also functions as the Iowa DNR NE Regional Office for Fisheries, Wildlife and Law Enforcement. It is located on a section of the Maquoketa River that runs through the downtown district. This park is approximately 900 feet long and features six 18" drops. It was built in 2013, located at Central Park. A concrete Skate Park was built on the same site in 2013. The park was opened in June 2015 and features three different types of skateboarding. It also features a water slide, a diving board and a sand volleyball court. It has been named one of Iowa's best parks by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) The park is located in the town of Manchester and Delaware County, Iowa, and has a population of around 2,500 people.
