Coralville is a city in Johnson County, Iowa, United States. It is a suburb of Iowa City and part of the Iowa City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city's name is derived from the fossils that are found in the limestone along the Iowa River. Coralville is also the location where some 1300 Mormon immigrants stopped to make camp in their migration of 1856 after having traveled west by rail. The Edgewater Park Site, a 3,800-year-old archaeological site along theIowa River, is the oldest site in Iowa with evidence of domesticated plant use. The first mill at Coralville was built in 1844, and in the years that followed, a number of watermills were powered by the Coralville mill dam. In 1958, the United States Army Corps of Engineers completed Coralville Dam, four miles (6 km) north of the city, creating Coralville Lake. Except for the Great Flood of 1993 and the Great Iowa flood of 2008, the dam has helped prevent serious flooding in the city. On July 29, 1998, Coralville's Ridge Mall opened, then the largest shopping center in the state with more than 100 stores. Around that time, the "city center" area was created along the U.S. Route 6th Avenue with its intersection with its "strip" near 12th Avenue. In 2006, a 5100-seat arena, Xtream, opened in the Iowa Landing neighborhood of Coralville. In the 2020 census, the city's population was 22,318.

History

Coralville is the primary city name, but also Iowa City, Oakdale are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Coralville, Iowa. Coralville was incorporated as a city on June 1, 1857. The city's name is derived from the fossils that are found in the limestone along the Iowa River. Coralville is the location of the Edgewater Park Site, a 3,800-year-old archaeological site. The Coral Ridge Mall opened on July 29, 1998, with more than 100 stores, then the largest shopping center in the state. It is home to the Iowa Heartlanders professional hockey team, proud affiliates of the Minnesota Wild and the Iowa Wild Wild L.A. Xtream Arena, a 5,100-seat venue, will open in 2020 in the city's Iowa River's Landing neighborhood. The First Methodist Church was built in 1963 to the designs by architect Thomas Patrick Reilly of Crites & McConnell, 860 17th Street S.E, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed Coralville Dam in 1958, four miles (6 km) north of the city, creating Coralville Lake. Except for the Great Flood of 1993 and the Great Iowa flood of 2008, the dam has helped prevent serious flooding in Coralville. In the mid-1960s, the independent school district of Coralville was annexed by the Iowa City Community School District. By 1970 Coralville's population had jumped to 6,130. The construction of Interstate 80 in the 1960s brought several motels, fast-food restaurants, and gas stations to Coralville, and the city had almost fully recovered within two years. A historical marker commemorating the Mormon Handcart Brigade was erected in 1936.

Geography

Coralville is located in Johnson County at 41°4118N 91°3512W (41.688215, -91.586764) The Iowa River runs along the east edge of Coralville and forms part of the boundary with Iowa City. Interstate 80 runs eastwest through Coralville, and most of the city's newer housing subdivisions are located north of I-80. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.05 square miles (31.21 km²) of which 12.01 square miles is land and 0.04 sq miles (0.10km²) is water. The city is home to the University of Iowa's Coralville College of Pharmacy. Coralville is also home to Iowa State University's College of Nursing. The university's campus is located on the Iowa River, which runs through the city. The University's Medical Center is also located in Coralville. The Coralville School District was founded in the early 1900s. The school district is one of the oldest in the state. It was founded by the Iowa State Normal School District in 1883. The district was the first in Iowa to graduate from high school with a bachelor's degree. It is also the first to graduate with a master's degree in the same year. The state's oldest high school, Coralville High School, was established in 1881. The high school was the only one in Iowa that graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
