Naples is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. It is part of the PortlandSouth PortlandBiddeford, Maine metropolitan statistical area. The town was incorporated on March 4, 1834, from parts of Otisfield, Harrison, Raymond and Bridgton. The Bay of Naples Inn, which faced Mount Washington and the east side of the White Mountains, was a popular resort during the early 20th century. Since 1985, the Naples Casino building has hosted the world famous Rick's Cafe. Naples is home to part of Sebago Lake State Park, and is drained by the Songo River. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 37.25 square miles (96.48 km²), of which, 31.82 sq miles (82.41 km²) of it is land and 5.43sq miles (14.06km²) is water. In the 2010 census, there were 3,872 people, 1,579 households, and 1,094 families living in the town. The population of the town was 3,925 at the 2020 census, and it is a resort area. It was named for Naples, Italy, and was founded in 1790. The Songo Lock was completed two years before town incorporation, allowing passage of boats from Harrison to Portland through the Cumberland and Oxford Canal in Standish. Visitors in the 19th century included Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Nathaniel Hawthorne. The bay of Naples inn remained open through the 1951 season, but in 1964 was deemed unprofitable and razed.
History
Named for Naples, Italy, the town was incorporated on March 4, 1834, from parts of Otisfield, Harrison, Raymond and Bridgton. Visitors in the 19th century included Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Nathaniel Hawthorne. The Bay of Naples Inn, which faced Mount Washington and the east side of the White Mountains, was a popular resort during the early 20th century. The Inn remained open through the 1951 season, but in 1964 was deemed unprofitable and razed. Since 1985 The Naples Casino building has hosted the world famous Rick's Cafe. The town is located on the shores of Long Lake, one of the largest lakes in New Hampshire. The area was settled in 1790, with hay being the principal crop. It was incorporated in 1834 and annexed more land between 1845 and 1856. The Songo Lock, completed two years before town incorporation, linked Long Lake and Brandy Pond with Sebago Lake, allowing passage of boats from Harrison to Portland through the Cumberland and Oxford Canal in Standish. A canning factory and cooperage were established at Naples village. The community also produced carriages, men's and boy's clothing, boots and shoes. The scenery of the lakes, however, would make tourism the dominant industry. Automobile tourists began arriving after designation of the Theodore Roosevelt International Highway in 1919 (identified as United States Route 302 since 1935) The Bay Of Naples Inn was open until July 26, 1899, with 80 bedrooms.
