West Bloomfield is sometimes referred to by its residents as the "lake township of Oakland County", due to it being heavily dotted with small and medium-sized lakes. Most of the township's population growth has occurred since the 1960s, as many residents moved there from the inner ring Detroit suburbs. The township has a total area of 31.2 square miles (81 km²), of which 27.3 sq miles (71 km²) is land and 3.9sq miles (10km²), or 12.49%, is water. The school districts that serve the town include the West. Bloomfield School District, Waterford. Public Schools, Birmingham City School District, Pontiac School District. Walled Lake School District and Bloomfield Hills. Catholic Churches are under the Archdiocese of Detroit. Prince of Peace Church is in WestBloomfield. St. William Catholic Church, which includes portions of West Bloomfeld in its service area, operates St.William Catholic School, a K-8 school in Walled. Lake. In 1999 this library and the Awaji City Library in Awaji, Hyogo, Japan were paired as sister institutions. The town has the largest Jewish population in Michigan and is home to the largest synagogue in the U.S., with more than 2,000 members. The city of Detroit has the second-largest Jewish population after Detroit, with about 1,500 members.

Westacres is an unincorporated community in the township at Keith and Commerce Roads (42°3600N 83°2530W Elevation: 925 ft./282 m.). It is located in the county of Somerset. Westacres was founded in 1858. It was named after the town of the same name, which is in Somerset County, New Jersey. It has a population of about 1,000. The community is located at the intersection of two main roads: Keith and commerce roads and Interstate 80. It is in the Township of Somerset and the County of Somerset, in New Jersey, and is located on the New Jersey Turnpike at 42°36000N and 83°2500W. The town's name is derived from the name of a nearby county, Somerset, which was once part of Somerset County. It also means "West County" or "West Township" in English and "West Acres" in Spanish. The communities of West Bloomfield, Orchard Lake Village, Keego Harbor, and Sylvan Lake make up what is known as Greater WestBloomfield. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 31.2 square miles (81 km²), of which 27.3square miles (71 km²) is land and 3.9square miles of land (10 km²%) is water. It is located in south-central Oakland County about 10 miles (20 km) to the northwest from the Detroit city limits and has borders with Bloomfield Township to its east, Farmington Hills to its south, Commerce Township toits west, and four communities to its north: Waterford Township, Orchards Lake Village, Keego harbor, andsylvan Lake. The township is home to a large number of private country clubs, many of which are located on the shores of large lakes such as Cass Lake, Pine Lake, and orchard Lake. It also has a number of smaller lakes, which are scattered around these larger ones. It has a population of about 3,000. The largest lake in the county, Cass Lake is the largest in the township, and is located just a few miles away from the township.

West Bloomfield High School and the Frankel Jewish Academy of Metropolitan Detroit are in West Bloomfield proper, and St. Mary's Preparatory is in Orchard Lake Village. Catholic schools are under the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit. In 1999 this library and the Awaji City Library in Awaji, Hyogo, Japan were paired as sister institutions. The town is part of the Bloomfield Hills School District, which includes Farmington, Birmingham, Pontiac, Waterford, and Walled Lake. The Bloomfield Township Public Library serves the entire town. The library is located in a former manufacturing plant that was converted into a public library in the 1970s. It is located on the former site of a former auto parts plant that once stood on the site of the former Detroit International Airport. It was closed in the 1980s and replaced by a new, state-of-the-art library that opened in the 1990s. The public library is now located in the Farmington Public Schools district, which also includes the Birmingham City School District and the Pontiac School District. The school district also operates a K-8 school, St. William Catholic School, which is in WalledLake. The city is home to the U.S. Air Force Academy, which has a base in Bloomfield, Michigan. In 2004 the Chaldean Cultural Center, the largest of its kind in the United States, was eatablished in the Township. About 1.6% of families and 2.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.0% of those under age 18 and over 65 and over. The racial makeup of the township is 84.25% White, 5.18% Black or African American, 0.12% Native American, 7.81% Asian,0.02% Pacific Islander, and 0.38% from other races. The percentage of Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.40%. The township has a large Jewish population. It is also home to a Jewish high school and Jewish community center. The population of the Township was 64,860 as of the Census of 2000, with a population density of 2,374.3.
