Blooming Prairie is a city in Dodge and Steele counties in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 1,996 at the 2010 census. Most of the city is located within Steele County; only a small part extends into Dodge County. Blooming Prairie was platted in 1868, taking the name of the surrounding Blooming Prairie Township, which was organized one year earlier. The city was incorporated by 1874. Its historic downtown is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Before the Prohibition Act came into effect, Blooming Prairie's presence near the intersection of Mower, Freeborn, Dodge, and Steele county made it a lucrative hub for the sale of alcohol according to the Mower County Historical Society. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.41 square miles (3.65 km²), all of which is land. U.S. Highway 218 and Minnesota State Highway 30 are the main routes in the city. In 2000, there were 1,933 people, 748 households, and 504 families living in Blooming Prairie. In 2010, the population was1,996, with 25% under the age of 18 living with them, 57.8% were living together, and 16.3% were non-families. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was2.92. In the city, the median age was 40.5 years. For every 100 females, there are 88 males, and for every 100 males there were 88 females.

History

Blooming Prairie is the primary city name, but also Blmng Prairie are acceptable city names or spellings, Bixby, Newry, Summit on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Blooming Prairie. Blooming Prairie was platted in 1868, taking the name of the surrounding Blooming Prairie Township. A post office has been in operation at Blooming Prairie since 1868. The city was incorporated by 1874. Blooming Prairie's historic downtown is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During the Prohibition Act, several tunnels were dug under the businesses on Main Street for the purpose of making and peddling moonshine, according to many of the residents of Blooming Prairie. In 1917, Steele County was the only one of the four to be considered "wet", meaning it was legal to both own and consume alcohol, like in "dry" counties, but also legal to sell. It was also the only county in Mower County that was considered "dry", meaning that it was illegal to own and sell alcohol at the same time. The county was dry by the end of the 1920s, and wet by the start of the 1930s. The town is located near the intersection of the counties of Mower, Freeborn, Dodge, and Steele, which made it a lucrative hub for the sale of alcohol according to the Mowers County Historical Society. It is located on the U.S. Census Bureau's list of the top 100 places to live in the state of Iowa, which includes Blooming Prairie, Mower and Freeborn counties as well as Dodge and Steele counties. It has a population of 2,816. It also has the highest percentage of residents of any state or county in the United States, with Blooming Prairie having the highest proportion of residents.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.41 square miles (3.65 km²), all land. U.S. Highway 218 and Minnesota State Highway 30 are the main routes in the city. The city is located on the Minnesota River, which flows through the center of the city and into the Red Lake River. The Red Lake is a tributary of the Red River, and flows into the Mississippi River. It is also known as the "Red River River Valley" because of the river's riverbeds. The town is home to the Minnesota State Medical Examiner's Office, which conducts autopsies on the dead body of victims of crime and/or crime-related incidents. It also serves as the location of the Minnesota Department of Health, which has an office in the town of Red Lake. The U.N. World Health Organization has a branch office in Red Lake, which was established in 1973. It was the first of its kind in the world, and is one of the largest in North America, with a population of more than 1,000,000. The United States Department of Agriculture has a regional office in Whitehall, Minnesota, which is located in the northern part of the town. It has a post office, which opened in 1883. It serves as a hub for the city's economy and has a population base of about 2,000 people. In the city, there are more than 3,000 homes, and the majority of them are white.
