Stillwater

Stillwater is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and the county seat of Washington County. It is in the MinneapolisSaint Paul metropolitan area, on the west bank of the St. Croix River, across from Houlton, Wisconsin. The name "Stillwater" was proposed in 1843 by John McKusick, who built its first sawmill and was later a state senator. In 1848, a territorial convention that began the process of establishing Minnesota as a state was held in Stillwater, at the corner of Myrtle and Main Streets. Minnesota officially became a territory in 1849 and a state in 1858. Stillwater was officially incorporated as a city on March 4, 1854 (the same day as St. Paul). Stillwater is often called "the birthplace of Minnesota" due to its role in the establishment of the state. The city has an area of 7.98 square miles (20.67 km²) and a population of 18,225 at the 2010 census. State Highways 36, 95, and 96 are three of the community's main routes. Stillwater is the primary city name, but also Oak Park Heights, Oak Park Hgts, Oak Park Hts, W Lakeland, West Lakeland are acceptable city names or spellings, Grant Township on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The city has a population of 1,856. The population of the city was 1,744 at the 2010 census. The town has a total area of 6.96 square miles, of which 1.02 square miles is water. It is located on the Mississippi River, which flows through the city. The community is located in the eastern part of the state. The state's population is 1,861, with the city having a total population of 2,854. The area has a land area of 6.96 sq miles (18.03 km²), of which 1.02 square miles (2.64 miles) is land and 1.01 square mile (1.03 km²) is water, making it one of the largest cities in the state in terms of land area. It also has a water supply of 1.0 sq mile (0.8 km), making it the second largest city in the county. It has a paved road system that runs through the town, which was built in the early 1900s. It was the first town in the area to be built in 1881. The first town to be founded in the town was in 1883. The current town was founded in 1903.

Name

The name "Stillwater" was proposed in 1843 by John McKusick, who built its first sawmill and was later a state senator. The name derives from the calmness of the St. Croix River near the town center. The Dakota called it Hoan Wane Kin, meaning "the place where the fish lies" The Ojibwe name for the place was Giigoonzh-agomod, with the slightly different meaning of "where the fish floats" In English, the name has been variously rendered as Hogan-wahnkay-kin, Hogan-Wauke-kin and Hogan-wan-kee. It is also known as Stillwater or Stillwater-Woolwich in some parts of the U.S. and Stillwater, Maine in other parts of Maine. The town's name is derived from a legend in which a man was transformed into a giant fish (a catfish or a pike, depending on the version) and then into a sandbar. The legend involves a man being found floating in the lake, with his ultimate transformation into "a piece of land crossing the lake there" (i.e., the sandbar) The name is still used in the town of Stillwater today, along with the name of the nearby town of Afton, Maine, which was once called Stillwater and was once known as Hogan-Wahnkay. It has also been used in some other places in the United States and Canada, such as in the city of Woolwich.

History

Stillwater is often referred to as the birthplace of Minnesota. The settlement was founded on October 26, 1843, when four partners formed the Stillwater Lumber Company. In 1848, a territorial convention that began the process of establishing Minnesota as a state was held in Stillwater, at the corner of Myrtle and Main Streets. Minnesota officially became a territory in 1849 and a state in 1858. The Minnesota Territorial Prison (later Minnesota State Prison) was opened in 1853. In 1921, Charles Strite invented the automatic pop-up bread toaster in stillwater. In 1996 the city of Stillwater entered into an agreement with Stillwater Township to annex land. In 2015, the city council approved the annexing the last of the land covered by the agreement. The city's western border is now Manning Avenue (County Road 15) The northern border is mostly, but not entirely, Minnesota Highway 96. In 2020 it will become part of a five-mile trail loop running through Stillwater and Houlton, Wisconsin. The lift bridge over the St. Croix River was completed in 1931 at a final cost of $460,174, which was split equally between Minnesota and Wisconsin. It was part of Minnesota State Highway 36 until 2017, when it closed. The Verne Swain and the Capitol appeared at the docks in the early 20th century. Steamboats were used most widely from 1860 to 1890, and a few are still used for entertainment today.

As of the census of 2010, there were 18,225 people, 7,075 households, and 4,885 families living in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 99.9% white and 0.1% non-white. In the city, the population was spread out, with 27% of the population under 18, 6% of 18 to 24, and 11.4% of those 25 to 64 years old or older living in a household or apartment. The average age of a household was 40.5 years, and the median age of the household was 42 years. The town's median household income was $28.2 million, and its average household consumption was $31.1 million. In 2000, the city's population was 15,143, with 5,926 housing units, and 1.8 million people (or 1.9%) living in an apartment or building. In 2010 the city had a population of 18,224, with 6,885 households, including 5,797 families. The population density was 2,618.5 inhabitants per squaremile (1,011.0/ km²).

Education

Stillwater has a mix of public district, public charter, and private schools at the primary and secondary levels. The city is served by the Stillwater Area Public Schools system. The nearest high school is stillwater Area High School in Oak Park Heights, Minnesota. Stillwater is home to Stillwater High School, a private high school. The Stillwater Public Library is located in the city's downtown area. The library is open seven days a week and has a waiting list of more than 1,000 students. It is also home to a number of private schools, including Stillwater Christian School and Stillwater Preparatory School. It also has a public library, Stillwater Memorial Library, and a public charter school. It has a high school and a middle and high school, both of which are located in Stillwater. There are no high schools in the town, but there is a charter school in the neighboring town of Orono, Minnesota, which has a population of about 2,000. The school district has a charter program for high school students, and the high school has a private school program for the middle and secondary grades. There is also a school for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, which is open to the public. The high school program is also open to students from all over the state of Minnesota and the U.S. It was founded in the 1950s and has been in operation since the 1960s and 1970s. The town is located on the banks of the Mississippi River.

In popular culture

Stillwater is a town in Minnesota. It is the setting of several films, including The Unearthing and The Cure. The town is also the setting for the novel series The Emigrants and the musical Kristina från Duvemåla. Stillwater is the location of the town of Stillwater, Minnesota, in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The city is home to the Stillwater Correctional Center, which was built in the early 20th century. The Stillwater area is the site of several popular YouTube videos, including "Grumpy Old Men" and "Overnight Delivery" The town also appears in the film Clouds, based on a true story about a family of Swedish emigrants who emigrated to Minnesota in 1850.
