Shallotte is a town in Brunswick County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,675 at the 2010 census. A former Hardee's restaurant, located on Main Street, was used as a filming location for the robbery scene in the Melissa McCarthy film Tammy. The Shallotte River passes through the town. The town is located in west-central Brunswick County at 33°5837N 78°2333W (33.977030, -78.392517). U.S. Route 17 (Ocean Highway) bypasses the town, bypassing the town center to the northwest. US 17 leads northeast 33 miles (53 km) to Wilmington and southwest 38 miles (61km) to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 9.3 square miles (24.2 km²) is land and 0.08 sq miles (0.72 km²), or 0.72%, is water. The median income for a household in the town was $41,616, and the median income. for a family was $52,284. About 4.7% of families and 10.2% of the town were below the poverty line, including 3.4% of those under age 18 and 7.7%) of those age 65 or over. Shallotte was the city of license for W47CK, now defunct, AM radio station WVCB/1410.

History

Shallotte is the primary city name, but also S Brunswick, South Brunswick are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Shallotte, North Carolina. A former Hardee's restaurant, located on Main Street, was used as a filming location for the robbery scene in the Melissa McCarthy film Tammy. It was demolished in 2017 and a Zaxby's was built in the same lot in the early summer of 2017. The town of Shallotte was incorporated as a town in 1899. It is located on the banks of the Mississippi River. It has a population of about 2,000. The city is located near the junction of two rivers, the Mississippi River and the Illinois River. The Mississippi River runs through Shallotte. The Ill Illinois River flows through the town and into the Mississippi. It also runs through a portion of the town's downtown, which is known as the "Little River" The town was founded in 1899 and was incorporated in 1900. The population was about 1,200 at the time. It grew to 2,500 by the end of the 20th century. The current population is about 3,200. The Town has a history of being incorporated. The first incorporation took place in 1903 and the town was officially incorporated in 1904. It became a city in 1907. It had a population 1,000 in 1910 and a population 2,200 in 1913. It received its first post-incorporation charter on July 1, 1925. It got its current name in 1929. The last incorporation was on July 31, 1929. It took place on the site of a former Hardees restaurant, which was later demolished.

Shallotte is located in west-central Brunswick County at 33°5837N 78°2333W (33.977030, -78.392517). U.S. Route 17 (Ocean Highway) passes through the town, bypassing the town center to the northwest. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 9.3 square miles (24.2 km²), of which 9.1 square miles is land and 0.08 square miles, or 0.72%, is water. US 17 leads northeast 33 miles (53km) to Wilmington and southwest 38 miles (61 km) to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The town is located on the banks of the Little Pungo River, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Yemassee River. It is the only town in Brunswick County with a population of more than 1,000, and the town is home to the South Carolina College of Arts and Sciences. The college has a business school, which offers classes in business, technology, and business studies. It also has a community center, which serves as a hub for the college's business and business community. The Town of Shallotte has a post office, which opened in 1903. It was the first post office in the state, and is still the only one in the county. It has been the location of the town's post office for more than 100 years. The post office closed in the 1970s and reopened in the 1990s.

The town is located on the shores of the Red River, which is a tributary of the Little Red River. The Red River runs through the town and flows into the Mississippi River. It is the only river in the state that runs through this area of the United States.
