History

Berwyn is the primary city name, but also Tredyffrin are acceptable city names or spellings. The town received its present name in 1877 during the celebration of its centennial. One of the Welsh settlers proposed to name the village after the Berwyn Hills overlooking the Valley of the Dee River in Denbighshire, Wales. At times, the village has been called Cocheltown, Reeseville, Glassley, and Gaysville. The town has a population of about 2,000 people. It is located in the Welsh county of Gwynedd, north-east of the city of Llandudno, and north-west of the town of Bridgend, in the county of Powys, south-west Wales. The village is located on the River Dee, which runs through the town. It was first recorded as a village in the 12th century, when it was known as "Gaysville" and later as "Reeseville" and "Glassley" The town's name was changed to "Berwyn" by a Welshman during the celebrations of the village's centennial in 1876. The name Berwyn was chosen because the village was on the banks of the River Berwyn, which flows into the Dee. The Berwyn hills are in the north of the valley, overlooking the Dee, and are known as the "Dee Valley" by the Welsh. The River Dee is a tributary to the River Rhydd, which is also in the south of the county, and is called the "Rhydd" river.
