Gregory is a city in western Gregory County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 1,221 at the 2020 census. The city took its name from its location in Gregory County. On May 8, 1965, an F5 tornado touched down on the town without any fatalities. In 2010, there were 1,295 people, 611 households, and 326 families living in the city. There were 730 housing units at an average density of 426.9 per square mile (164.8/km²). History
Gregory is the primary city name, but also Dixon, Iona are acceptable city names or spellings, Carlock on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Gregory, South Dakota. Gregory was laid out in 1904. A post office called Gregory has been in operation since 1904. The local paper for Gregory and the surrounding county, the Gregory Times-Advocate, was founded in 1910. On May 8, 1965, an F5 tornado touched down on the town without causing any fatalities. Notable person
Oscar Micheaux was the first major African-American feature filmmaker to direct a feature film. Micheaux is best known for his work on "The Color Purple" and "The Godfather," among other films. He is also known for being the first African-Americans to win the Academy Award for Best Documentary. He was also the first black man to win a Primetime Emmy Award for best cinematography. He also won an Oscar for best director for his short film, "Oscar," in 1994. He died in a car crash in 2005. He has been married to his longtime girlfriend, the actress and producer Lina Wertheim, since 2007. He had a son, Oscar Jr., and a daughter, Lina, with his first wife. He made his feature film debut with "The color red" in 1994, and won an Emmy for best directing in 1995. He went on to win an Oscar in 2000 for "The Lord of the Flies," in which he made his second feature-length film. His son Oscar Jr. also made a film, and was nominated for an Emmy in 2000. He won an Academy Award in 2002 for best documentary, "The Grand Budapest Hotel," for directing "The Great Gatsby" in 1998. His daughter Lina made her first film in 2000, and is now married to fellow filmmaker and actor Michael Douglas. He's also worked on several other films, including "Scoop" in 2002.
