Dickinson is a city in Galveston County, Texas, within HoustonThe WoodlandsSugar Land metropolitan area. The city is located on a tract of land granted to John Dickinson in 1824, and named after him. A settlement had been established in this area on Dickinson Bayou before 1850. The City of Dickinson constructed a new multimillion-dollar city hall and library complex which was dedicated June 30, 2009. In August 2017, Dickinson was devastated by Hurricane Harvey. Ninety percent of the city was flooded during the storm and 50% was destroyed by flooding. In January of 2021, Dickinson made national news by the Mayoral election run-off ending in a tie (1,010 votes to 1010 votes), Mayor Sean Skipworth was selected by drawing a name out of a hat. Dickinson is located at 29°2738N 95°0314W (29.460467, 95.053856). This is about 28 miles (45 km) southeast of Houston and 19 miles (31 km) northwest of Galvest on. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.3 square miles (26.6 km²), of which 9.9sq miles (25.6km²) is land and 0.42 sq miles (1.1km²), or 3.95%, is water. In May 2009 the city began hosting a crawfish festival, called the Red, White and Bayou Crawfish festival. In June of 2022 the city resumed the festival.

History

Dickinson is the primary city name, but also San Leon, Texas City are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of Dickinson. Dickinson is located on a tract of land granted to John Dickinson in 1824, and named after him. A settlement had been established in this area on Dickinson Bayou before 1850. The Galveston, Houston, and Henderson Railroad was built directly through Dickinson. In 1905, Italian ambassador Baron Mayor des Planches convinced about 150 Italians from crowded eastern cities to move to Dickinson. The city decided in 2018 not to continue with the festival, but in August of 2022 the city resumed the festival. In August of 2011, Council Member Position 1, H. Scott Apley died of the COVID-19 virus after making many anti-mask, anti-vaccine, social media posts. Johnnie Simpson Jr., a United Methodist Pastor, won the seat after earning 49% of the vote in a four-way special elction, and 60.3% ofThe city was devastated by Hurricane Harvey in August 2017. Dickinson is located at 29°2738N 95°0314W (29.460467, 95.053856). This is about 28 miles (45 km) southeast of Houston and 19 miles (31 km) northwest of Galveston. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.3 square miles (26.6 km²) of which 9.9 square miles is land and 0.42square miles (1.1 km²), or 3.95%, is water. The city is located on the Gulf of Mexico, which is about 20 miles (32 km) south of the city of Dickinson. The town of Dickinson has a population of about 2,000. It is located in the Texas Panhandle, about 30 miles (50 km) north of the state's largest city, Houston. It has a post office with the ZIP code of 47215. The City of Dickinson is in the Harris County, Texas, United States, and is located near the Texas-Louisiana border. The U.S. state of Texas is also known as Harris County and is about 40 miles (64 km) northeast of Houston. The state's population is 2,200, and the city's ZIP code is 47216. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in World War I and II. The Battle was the first battle to be fought in the Gulf Coast region.

Demographics

As of the 2020 U.S. census, there were 20,847 people, 7,892 households, and 5,545 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 75.35% White, 10.52% African American, 0.64% Native American, 1.21% Asian, 0,04% Pacific Islander, 12.82% from other races, and 2.43% from two or more races. The city's median income was $41,984, and the median income for a family was $46,585. In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.5% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 30. 5% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 9. 6% who were 65 years of age or older. Government and infrastructure

The Dickinson Police Department is located at 4000 Liggio Street. The Dickinson Post Office is Located at 2515 Termini Street. There are fire stations at 4500 FM 517 East, which also houses EMS, and 221FM 517 West. The fire department is run by Volunteers. The city hall and public library are located at 4403 Highway 3 and 4411 Highway 3, respectively. The City Hall is located on the second floor of a building on the third floor of the building. The public library is located in the basement of the City Hall on the fourth floor. It is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. It has a library that is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It also has a post office, which is open on weekdays from 9am to 5pm and on the weekends from 8am to 4pm. The police department and fire department are both run by volunteers. There is also an EMS station on the first floor of City Hall, which houses EMS and also houses the fire department. The post office is also located at the same place as the city hall. The library has a computer lab, which can be accessed by phone at 1-800-847-8255. Education

Most of Dickinson is part of the Dickinson Independent School District. Some of it is a part of Santa Fe Independent School district. Dickinson is served by the College of the Mainland, a community college in Texas City. Dickinson Public Library, operated by the city, is located at 4411 Highway 3. True Cross School was the first Roman Catholic school on the Galveston County mainland. The school was unusable due to Hurricane Harvey, and reopened for the 2019-2020 school year. Dickinson High School (9th12th Grade) is a public high school in the Dickinson ISD portion of the city. The city is home to the University of Texas at Texas City, which has a campus in the Texas City portion of Dickinson. The town also has its own library, which is run by the City of Texas City and is located in the city's downtown area. It is open to the public on Monday through Friday, and closed on Saturday and Sunday during the summer months. It has a branch of the Texas State Library in the town of Dickinson, which also serves the Santa Fe ISD portions of the town. Dickinson has a number of public charter schools, including Bay Area Charter Middle School and Queen of Angels Academy, a Roman Catholic pre-K8 school. Dickinson also has a handful of private schools, many of which are run by local parishes. It also has one of the largest public libraries in the state, which was built in the 1950s and is open through the end of the century.

Parks and recreation

The Galveston County Department of Parks and Senior Services operates the Dickinson Community Center at 2714 Highway 3. Paul Hopkins Park on 517 is host to the Festival of Lights each December. Elva Lobit Park and Zempter Park are parks that host the city's youth baseball leagues. A state-maintained boat dock is present at the Highway 3 and 146 bridges.Dickinson Bayou is a bayou that flows in and out of the city of Dickinson. The city is located on the Gulf of Mexico, which is a major shipping route for the Texas Gulf Coast. It is also a popular tourist destination, especially in the summer months when the weather is warm and the bayou is at its most active. The town has a population of about 3,000 people, with the majority of its residents living in or near the city limits.
