Hooksett is a town in Merrimack County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 14,871 at the 2020 census, up from 13,451 at the 2010 census. The town is located between Manchester, the state's largest city, and Concord. Robie's Country Store is a National Historic Landmark and a frequent stop for presidential candidates during the New Hampshire primary. The name may have come from a hook-shaped island in the Merrimacks or from early fishermen, who called the area "Hookline Falls" The highest point in Hooksett is Quimby Mountain, at 902 feet (275 m) above sea level, near the town's western border. Interstate 93 connects Hooksett to the White Mountains and Boston. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 37.1 square miles (96.2 km²), of which 36.1 sq mi (93.4 km²) are land and 1.1sq mi (2.8 km²] is water. Hooksett lies fully within the Merriamack River watershed. The first settlement in the area was Martins Ferry near theMerrimack River and what is today's Southern New Hampshire University. In 1794, the lottery-funded Hooksett Canal became part of the transportation facilities of the Amoskeag cotton mills in Manchester. In 1822, Hooksett was incorporated as "Chester Woods" and "Rowe's Corner" The first census, taken in 1830, reported 880 residents. The central village in town is defined as the Hooksett census-designated place.

History

Hooksett is the primary city name, but also Manchester are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Hooksett, New Hampshire. Hooksett was incorporated in 1822. The name may have come from a hook-shaped island in the Merrimack or from early fishermen, who called the area "Hookline Falls" There were several cross-river ferries located here, as well as lumber mills and a brick-making establishment powered by the falls. The first census, taken in 1830, reported 880 residents. In 1794, the lottery-funded Hooksett Canal became part of the transportation facilities of the Amoskeag cotton mills in Manchester. Today, Martin's Corner 1 mile (1.6 km) to the east bears the name of the Martin family who owned the ferry and the land around the area for decades. In 1822, Hooksett was first known as "Chester Woods" and "Rowe's Corner", the community was called "hooksett" for nearly fifty years before being incorporated. Today the town is home to Southern New Hampshire University and Hooksett High School. The town is also home to the University of New Hampshire, which was founded in 1858. The school is one of the oldest in the state and is located on the edge of the historic town of Houlton, New Hampshire. It has a campus that was once the site of the town's first public school, which opened in 1859. It is now the home of the New Hampshire Museum of Natural History and Science, which is also located in the town of Hooksett. The city's name is derived from the Hooksett River, which runs through the town.

Hooksett is situated on the Merrimack River in south-central New Hampshire. Interstate 93 connects Hooksett to the White Mountains and Boston. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 37.1 square miles (96.2 km²) of which 36.1 sq mi are land and 1.1sq mi (2.8km²) is water. Hooksett lies fully within the Merriack River watershed and is part of the New Hampshire-Massachusetts border. The town is located on New Hampshire's Turnpike, which runs through the center of the state. It is also on the New England Highway, which leads to Boston and the Boston area. It has a population of 2.88 million, according to the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau estimate. The nearest city is Manchester, New Hampshire, which is about 30 miles (50 km) to the east. The closest town to Hooksett, Candia, is about 20 miles (32 km) away. The largest city in the town is Manchester. The population of Candia is 1,816 (or 2.2 million people) and the town's largest city, Manchester, has a 2010 population of 1,788 (or 3.1 million people). The town is located on the New Hampshire Turnpike, which runs through the town's southern tip. It is the only town in the state to have a post office, which was established in 1859. It was the first post office in New Hampshire, and the first in the U.S. to open in 1869. The post office closed in 1875, and was replaced by a new post office that opened in 1881. The current post office is located in Hooksett, which has been open since 1879. It has a population of 13,450, as of the 2010 census.

Transportation

Five New Hampshire state routes, two Interstate Highways, and one U.S. route cross Hooksett. NH 27 begins in Hooksett at NH 28/US 3 and follows Whitehall Road eastwards into Candia. NH 28 Bypass enters from the southeast and Auburn after crossing a small portion of Manchester. NH 3A crosses Hooksett from south to north closely paralleling the Merrimack River and I-93 and is known locally as West River Road. NH 293 enters the town briefly near the southern border with Manchester and terminates at I- 93. There are three interchanges that provide access to Hooksett: one with NH 28 in South Hooksett, one withNH 3A just after crossing the Merriam River, and another with Hackett Hill Road in the northern part of Hooksett which also provides access to NH 3 a. There is an additional freeway junction with I-293. The portion of Interstate 93 north of I- 293 is part of the F.E. Everett Turnpike. The freeway has no exits that provide direct access to hooksett. It connects Manchester to Suncook, and Bow to the south and east. It is also known as Hooksett Road, Daniel Webster Highway, and Allenstown Road. The town is home to the New Hampshire Museum of Natural History, which is located in the town's historic center. The museum is open to the public on the second floor of a building that dates back to the 18th century.

Education

Hooksett is part of School Administrative Unit 15, along with the neighboring towns of Auburn and Candia. SAU-15 has no high school; students from Hooksett attend high school in neighboring school districts. One four-year university, Southern New Hampshire University, lies partially within Hooksett and partially in neighboring Manchester. In October 2013 618 high school students lived in Hooksett, with 426 of them attending Manchester school district schools. Students may still chose to attend Manchester schools after 2014.
