Gainesville was once a changing point for stagecoach horses on the Fauquier & Alexandria Turnpike. In 2006, the VDOT began working on the Gainesville Interchange improvement project, with construction officially starting in July 2011, in order to ease the traffic in the rapidly growing Gainesville-Haymarket area. It was completed on July 9, 2015. At the 2010 census, there were 11,481 people, 3,959 households and roughly 3,100 families living in the CDP. The population was 17,287 in the 2020 census. History

The person responsible for bringing the railroad through the village was Thomas Brawner Gaines (1814-1856), who had begun buying up property in the area as early as 1835. In 1994, the groundbreaking for Gainesville's first townhome community began; it was named Crossroads. In 2006, the VDOT began working on the Gainesville Interchange improvement project, with construction officially starting in July 2011, in order to ease the traffic in the rapidly growing Gainesville-Haymarket area. It was completed on July 9, 2015. The town of Gainesville is located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, near the border with West Virginia and the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S. State of Virginia. It has a population of about 3,000. The village was once known as New Stable, and a post office was opened there in Richard Graham's hotel and store in 1846. In 1856, a small community with aPost office flourished around the Gainville depot. During the American Civil War, Gainesville was occupied by both Confederate and Union armies and nearby Thoroughfare Gap in the Bull Run Mountains served as a path for soldiers to reach the First and Second battles ofBull Run. In the early 1940s the Southern Railway operated passenger service from Harrisonburg and Strasburg Junction through Gainesville.

The town has a population of 2,715. It is located on the Florida Turnpike, which runs through Gainesville. It has an elevation of 38.3 feet (12.7 meters) (1,068 m) The town is located in the eastern part of the Florida Panhandle, near the border with Florida and Florida Beach. The city's population is 2,071. It also has an area of 9.2 square miles, or 25.2 km², which includes the town of Gainesville, where it is the largest city in the Florida panhandle. The area has a climate of Cfa, with warm summers and mild winters.

Danica Roem represents Gainesville in the Virginia House of Delegates. She is the first openly transgender person to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. She was elected to the House in November 2014, and is currently serving her third term. Her district includes Gainesville, Prince William, Prince George's, and D.C. counties, as well as parts of Loudoun and Prince William counties. She has been a member of the House since 2008. She also served as a member from 2008 to 2012. She currently serves as a delegate to the Virginia State Senate, where she is a Democrat. Her seat is at the center of a controversy over the use of the N-word in the town's name. She says that the word "gainesville" is a derogatory term for the town, and that she is not a Gainesville resident. The town is also known as "Gainesville" or "Geesville" because it is the largest city in the county. The city's name is derived from the word Gainesville, which means "giant" in English.

Development

Major commercial and residential development has taken place in Gainesville since 2000. The Promenade at Virginia Gateway was developed by The Peterson Companies, including BJ's Warehouse, which opened in January 2012. Somerset Crossing has a Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and other shops. A proposed Haymarket / Gainesville railway station extension for the VRE was scheduled to open in 2022, connecting the region via commuter rail to Fairfax County, Manassas, and Washington, D.C. The town has six large shopping centers, including Target Supercenter, Lowe's, Best Buy, DSW, Walgreens, and many other stores and restaurants. It also has a number of smaller shopping centers such as Ross, Wegmans Food Markets, Michael's, and Harris Teeter. The city is home to the Virginia Military Institute, which was founded in 1864. It is also the home of the Virginia Tech football team, which won the NCAA championship in 1995 and 1996. It has been the site of the U.S. Open tennis tournament and the NCAA men's singles and women's singles championship. It was the location of the NCAA women's basketball tournament, which began in 1998. The University of Virginia's football team won the national championship in 2000 and 2002. The UVA men's basketball team also won the state championship in 2002 and 2003. The university's women's team was the runner-up in 2008 and 2009.
