The city was incorporated in 1801, and was named after the biblical cedars of Lebanon (Cedrus libani). Local residents have called Lebanon "Cedar City", mostly a reference to the abundance of cedar trees in the area. Lebanon is home to Cumberland University, a small, private four-year liberal arts institution. Cracker Barrel was founded in Lebanon by Dan Evins in 1969 and has its corporate headquarters there. In 2015, Chinese tile company Wonderful Group invested $150 million to build their company's first manufacturing location in North America in Lebanon. Lebanon hosts the annual Wilson County Fair, which is one of the largest county fairs in the United States. It is also home to Friendship Christian School, a private school founded in 1842, which was founded by the Christian sect of the same name. It also is the home to Wilson County Schools for grades 912 to 912, which includes four elementary schools and two middle schools. History

The city was incorporated in 1801, and was named after the biblical cedars of Lebanon (Cedrus libani) Local residents have called Lebanon "Cedar City", mostly a reference to the abundance of cedar trees in the area. The city is home to Cumberland University, a small, private four-year liberal arts institution. It is also home to the Lebanon Symphony Orchestra, which has been playing in the city for more than 100 years. It was founded in 1802, and is the oldest continuously operating symphony orchestra in the United States. It has been in existence since 1803, when it was founded as Lebanon's first post-bellum orchestra. The Symphony Orchestra has played in Lebanon since 1801. It also has a symphony hall, which was established in 1805, and a theatre, which dates back to 1805. It opened its doors to the public in 1808. It plays host to a variety of events, including the Lebanon Philharmonic Orchestra and the Lebanon Symphonic Band, which have been playing there since 1809. The orchestra also plays at the Lebanon Opera House, which is located in the center of the city, and also hosts a number of other cultural events. The Lebanon Symphony orchestra plays in the town of Lebanon, and has been known to play in Lebanon for over 100 years, since it was formed in 1803. The town also has its own theater, the Lebanon Music Hall, which opened in 1810. Lebanon is the home of the Cumberland College of Music.

Lebanon has a humid subtropical (Köppen Cfa) climate with mild winters and hot summers. Under the Trewartha climate classification, it is a temperate oceanic (Do) climate due to only 7 months having a mean 50 °F (10 °C) or higher. Lebanon is located at Latitude: 36° 12' 17.40" N Longitude: -86° 19' 21.00" W. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Lebanon has a total area of 38.63 square miles (100.1 km²) of which 38.5 square miles is land and 0.03% is water. The city has a population of 1,715,000 (1.8% of the country's population) and is located on the Euphrates River, which runs through the center of the city. It is the only country in the Middle East with a population over 1,000,000. Lebanon has an average temperature of 10 °C (62 °F) in the summer and 11 °C in the winter. It has a dry season with an average of 7 months with a mean temperature of 50 °F (8 °C), and a wet season with 7 months with a temperature of 50 °C (8°F) and a mean of 52  °F  (7°C). The city is home to the University of Lebanon, which was founded in 1788.

Demographics

As of the 2020 U.S. census, there were 38,431 people, 11,925 households, and 8,349 families residing in the city. The population estimate from the United States census has the population at 40,888 as of July 1, 2021. The median income for a household in theCity was $35,118, and the median family income was $45,094. The per capita income for the city was $20,366. About 9.3% of families and 13.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.4% of those age 65 or over. The city is located on the Ohio River, which runs through the center of the town. The Ohio River is one of the few rivers in the state that flows through the city, along with the Ohio and Ohio Turnpike. It is the only river that runs through most of the city's downtown area. The river is a tributary of the Little Ohio River. It was once known as the "Little Ohio River" or the "Ohio River River" due to its scenic beauty. It has been known to be a source of controversy in the past, with some residents claiming that the river has been used as a route by the Ohio National Guard to protect the city from flooding. The town was the site of the U.N. World War II-era Battle of the Bulge, which was fought from 1942 to 1945. The Battle was the first of the World War I-era battles that took place.

Economy

Cracker Barrel was founded in Lebanon by Dan Evins in 1969 and has its corporate headquarters there. The city threatened to sue Dell Inc. for eliminating 700 of the 1,000 jobs the company proffered as part of a tax deal on which the company later reneged. Chinese tile company Wonderful Group invested $150 million to build their company's first manufacturing location in North America. The fraternity Sigma Pi was headquartered in Lebanon from 2013 until 2019, when it sold the historic Mitchell House to the City of Lebanon. Tritium DCFC Limited opened a EV fast charger manufacturing plant in 2022, and will be the first of its kind in the U.S. and the second in the world. The company will be based in Lebanon and will produce electric car chargers at a facility in the town of Lektor, near the city of Ljubljana. It will be one of the largest electric car manufacturing plants in the United States, with a workforce of more than 2,000. It is expected to be open by the end of the year and will employ around 1,500 people. The town has a population of 2.5 million people, making it the second largest city in Lebanon after Tripoli. It has a GDP of $1.2 billion, which is the third largest in the Middle East. The country's economy is estimated to be worth more than $2.5 billion. The economy is the second-largest in the region, after the United Arab Emirates.

Arts and culture

Lebanon hosts the annual Tennessee State / Wilson County Fair. The fair is one of the largest state fairs in the United States. Lebanon is home to the U.S. National Museum of Fine Arts. The museum is located in the town of Lebanon, in the south of the country.

Education

The Lebanon Special School District encompasses four elementary schools and two middle schools. Small portions of Lebanon are in the Wilson County Schools for all years K12. Lebanon also has one private school, Friendship Christian School. Cumberland University has produced over eighty Congressmen and Senators such as Albert Gore Sr. and Thomas Gore. The institution has also produced a Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Cordell Hull, who served as Secretary of State from March 1933 to November 1944. The university was founded in 1842 and has a rich heritage and has produced a number of famous people, including Albert Gore, Jr., Thomas Gore, and Albert Gore's son, Albert Gore Jr. The school is located in the town of Lebanon, which is located on the banks of the Cumberland River. The town is also home to the Lebanon High School, which was built in the 1970s. The high school was reconstructed in the 1990s and is now one of the most technologically advanced schools in the country. It is located near the Lebanon River, which runs through the town. Infrastructure

Lebanon has a municipal airport referenced by FAA Identifier M54. Rail service began in 1871 with the now defunct Tennessee & Pacific Railroad, which ran to Nashville. Commuter rail service to Nashville began service in 2006 via the Music City Star. There are two times when trains operate outside the normal service. July 4 fireworks at Riverfront Park calls for a special event train. When the Tennessee Titans play at home, a special service called Game-Day Express operates. The last original passenger train departed Lebanon in 1935. The city is located on the Cumberland River, which runs through the center of the city. It is located near the intersection of Interstate 40 and U.S. Route 70, which connects the city to Nashville to the west and Smithville to the southeast. The eastern terminus of Interstate 840 is located west of theCity. State Route 109 passes west of Lebanon and connects to Gallatin to the north. Secondary State Routes 141 and 166 also pass through Lebanon and connect to Murfreesboro, Kentucky and Scottsville, Kentucky to the south. The town is home to the Nashville and Eastern Railroad short line, which operates between Nashville and Carthage. It also runs between Carthage and the city's eastern suburbs, to the towns of Smithville and Murfreeboro, and to the town of Lebanon. It has two runways: Runway 1/19 is 5,000 by 100 feet (1,524 by 30 m) and Runway 4/22 is turf 1,801 by 150 feet (549 by 46 m).
