Wadsworth is a city in Medina County, Ohio, United States. Founded on March 1, 1814, the city was named after General Elijah Wadsworth, a Revolutionary War hero and War of 1812 officer. The population was 24,007 at the 2020 census. It is counted as part of the Cleveland metropolitan area, although it functions mainly as a suburb of Akron. The city has a total area of 10.62 square miles (27.51 km²) It is located just a few miles south of the eastwest continental divide.Nearby cities include Akron and Cleveland. Wadsworth is served by a daily newspaper, The Medina County Gazette, which is published every day of the week except Sundays, and a free weekly newspaper, the Wadsworth Post. The high school and middle school mascot is the grizzly bear. The total enrollment is approximately 4,849 students in Wadsworth schools. Other schools include a Roman Catholic parochial school serving students in Kindergarten through 8th grade and a Catholic elementary school serving children in 4th through 6th grade. The school district is the single largest employer in the city. It passed six of the last seven levies put before the voters. In addition, the district voters supported the recent Medina County Sales Tax (the first in Ohio), at a rate of 74% for the levy. According to school district Treasurer Doug Beeman, revenues for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2007, exceeded expenditures as the school system continues to manage the resources provided by the community.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.62 square miles (27.51 km²), all land. It is located just a few miles south of the eastwest continental divide.Nearby cities include Akron and Cleveland. The city is located on the Ohio River, which is a tributary of the Scioto River. It has a population of about 2,000. The population of the city was 3,000 at the time of the U.S. Census in 1950. It was 4,500 at the start of the 20th century, when it was declared a city. The current population is about 3,500. The area has an area of about 10,000 square miles, or 27,000 km², all of which is land. Its population is approximately 2,200. It's located on a river that divides the Ohio and Scioto Rivers, which divides the city into two sections, the north and the south. It also has a lake, which runs through the city, and a river, which flows through the center of the town. The town is located near the Ohio Turnpike, which was built in 1838. It runs through a valley that was once called the Cuyahoga River, and was once known as the Cudahogue River. It is also located on Ohio's Ohio River and Ohio River Rivers, which run through the city and into the Ohio City area. The Ohio River runs through the center of Wadsworth, and the city is also on theOhio River River and the Ohio-Ohio Turnpix, both of which are in the city's northern part. The town is also home to the Ohio State University, which was founded in 1876 and is located in the southern part of the town. The Wadsworth area is known as the "Ohio River Valley" because of its many rivers and streams. It also has a number of lakes, including the Ohio and Ohio Rivers, that flow through the western portion of the community. It has a population of about 2,000, and is home to Wadsworth High School, a public high school, Wadsworth Middle School, and a high school. The airport is located about 2 miles from the city center. It was built in the 1950s and is the first airport in the state, and opened in the 1960s. It serves as a hub for air travel in the Ohio Valley.

Blue Tip Festival

The Blue Tip Festival is a five-day celebration of the Wadsworth community. The festival is named after the historic strike-anywhere blue tip matches which were once manufactured in Wadsworth. While match manufacturing left Wadsworth in the 1980s, the festival uses the name and giant match to affirm the community's past and celebrate the modern American city. 2017 marked the 45th annual Bluetip Festival. Revenues from the festival are donated to Wadsworth area non-profit groups. The Blue Tip festival is now run by a non- nonprofit organization, staffed entirely by volunteers, referred to as the BlueTip Festival Committee. The festival offers amusement rides, festival foods, midway games, contests, a local merchant's tent, and other entertainment. Special events have included passenger train rides on the Blue Tip Express, big top circus performances, paint ball shooting ranges, pony rides, bingo tents, and assorted musical performances. Additional events, such as the Wadworth Running Club's "Matchstick 4 Mile" foot race and the "Blue Tip Idol" singing contest, challenge area athletes and performers. The event is held every year on the last Saturday of the festival's duration, from September to November. It is free and open to the public, but donations can be made by calling the festival committee at (859) 615-8255. The Festival Committee is run by volunteers and is staffed by volunteers who are referred to by the name the Blue tip Festival Committee, or simply as "the committee".
