Northville is a suburb of Metro Detroit and is located about 11 miles (17.7 km) west of the city of Detroit and 17 miles (27.4 km) northeast of Ann Arbor. Northville was first settled by European Americans in 1825, and was incorporated as a Village in 1867. The city was incorporated in 1955 along the boundaries of the Village of Northville, and grew rapidly during the prolonged period of flight from Detroit in the middle and late 20th century. The population was 6,119 at the 2020 census. The first land patent in the Northville area was granted to Gideon Benton in 1823; the current Cass Benton Park is located here. In 1944, Northville Downs opened as the first nighttime harness racing track in Michigan. The Downs were built on the site of the former Wayne County Fair, where Joe Louis trained in 1939 for his World Championship later that year. In 1925, the Penniman-Allen Theater opened downtown and remained open through the mid-70's. The theater eventually closed, but opened again in 1978 as the Marquis Theater and is now home to live children's theater. The most recent annexation was the incorporation of the City of Novi into Northville Township in 1969. The City's northern boundary was permitted by the city-owned Charter Township in order to expand the city to expand its boundaries. The current city boundaries were fixed by the annexation of the most recent portion of the Charter Township, which was generally pre-owned by the City.

History

Northville is the primary city name, but also Northville Township, Northvl Twp are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of Northville. Northville was first settled by European Americans in 1825, and was incorporated as a Village in 1867. The first land patent in the Northville area was granted to Gideon Benton in 1823. Henry Ford purchased a factory in Northville and moved machinery from plants in the area to the factory in 1919. In 1944, Northville Downs opened as the first nighttime harness racing track in Michigan. The city was incorporated in 1955 along the boundaries of the Village of Northville, and grew rapidly during the prolonged period of white flight from the City of Detroit in the middle and late 20th century. Northville's Victorian heritage is celebrated every September in the Victorian Festival, which was recently rechristened the "Heritage Festival". The city boundaries expanded through annexation of portions of Novi Township and Northville Township in 1969. The most recent annexation was an expansion of the Rural Hill Cemetery in order for the city to expand its city-owned and operated cemetery to expand the city. The Northville Library was organized by the Ladies Association in 1889, and had 1,200 books by 1892. The library was located in the former Young Men's Hall until 1964, when it moved again to the newly built Northville Square Mall; it returned to City Hall in 1996. In 1975, the library moved again, temporarily to the new City Hall; Northville Mall was built in 1980, and the library returned to the City Hall again in 1980. The current library is located on the corner of Center Street and 7 Mile Road.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.06 square miles (5.34 km²) The city is divided almost equally between Oakland County and Wayne County. Eight Mile Road (or Baseline Road) serves as the county line. The city's population is 5,970, and it has a land area of 1.06 sq miles (2.75 sq km²), of which 0.02 sq mi (0.05 sq km) is water. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the city's area to be 2.04 square miles, or 5.28 km². It has a water area of 0.97 sq mi, or 0.04 km², and a population of 5, 970, or 4.01% of its area. It is in Oakland County, which has 1.00 square miles of land, and 3,231 residents (54.1%). Wayne County contains 1.0 square mile of land and 2,739 residents (45.9%) and 1,06 sq mi of land (51.4% of the population) It is also in Macomb County, with 1.02 square miles and 2.75 residents (48.6%) of area, and 1.07 sq mi and 3.02 km² of land. It also has a lake, the Macomb River, which runs through the center of the city. It was the site of the Battle of the Bulge, which took place in 1864.

Mill Race Village

Mill Race Village was opened on the site of John Miller's gristmill in 1972. Historic buildings were colocated here to represent a typical gathering of early buildings and uses. Located on Griswold Avenue, the complex includes the following: New School Church, formerly used as the Northville District Library, which is still operating as a church. Cady Inn, documented as a stop on the Underground Railroad for refugee slaves escaping to freedom in Canada. Interurban Station, built in 1898 and moved to the village in 1990. The building is occupied by the village's store, which was built in 1832 and is now used as a weavers' guild. A replica general store is also located in the village. The village is open to the public and has a free shuttle service between the village and the nearby town of Northville, New Hampshire. It is also open to tourists and the public can take a tour of the village, which includes a guided tour of some of the historic buildings and the village center. It also offers a chance to meet local residents and visitors to see some of their historic sights and artifacts. The Village is open daily from 9am to 5pm and is open on the weekend from 8am to 11pm. It was opened by Ford Motor Company in 1972, made possible by a donation from Ford Motor Co. The town's name is derived from the word "mill" which means "to mill" or "to run" in English. The name Mill Race was adopted by Ford in honor of the town's founder, John Miller.

Events

Northville is located in the central part of the town of Northville. The city is home to the Northville Farmers Market, a farmers market, and the Village Christmas Parade. The Northville Grub Crawl is an annual food crawl that takes place in July and November. Northville is also the site of the annual Victorian Festival, which is held in September. The Christmas Parade is held on a Friday night in November every year, and has been held since 1989. The town also hosts a Chili and Salsa Cookoff and Ice Carving in January and February. It is also home to Northville's annual Summer Friday Night Concerts, held in Town Square and the Senior Center. It also hosts the annual Northville Art in the Sun, an art fair and a Farmers Market each June and October. The village also has its own annual Christmas parade, held on the last Friday of November each year. It has also hosted the annual Fire and Ice Cookoff, a chili and salsa cookoff, and a senior center ice carving competition. It was named the "Heritage Festival" in 2016 and is now called the "Victorian Festival" for its Victorian-themed events. The festival is held every September and features games, magic shows, music, rides, rides and art in Downtown Northville, as well as a Christmas parade. It will be renamed the "Northville Heritage Festival"' in 2016 to honor the city's Victorian heritage. In 2016, Northville will also host its first-ever Christmas Parade, which will take place on November 26.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 5,970 people, 2,596 households, and 1,643 families living in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 93.7% White, 1.6% African American, 0.1% Native American, 2.6%. The city's median income was $98,054 in 2007, and the median income for a family was $123,509. Education

Northville Public Schools is the local school district. Amerman Elementary School and Hillside Middle School are in the Northville city limits. Northville High School in Northville Township is the zoned high school for all of Northville District. Catholic schools are under the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit. St. Paul's Lutheran School, a Lutheran K-8 school, is also inNorthville. The affiliated church, founded in 1896 by Rev. John J Goulding, had established, dis-established, and then, in 1959, re-established the school. Its current facility has ten rooms. As of 2020 the school has over 450 students. It was initially in a building with two rooms. The current 19 classroom facility opened in 2006. The first facility, which opened in 1952, had four rooms. An addition with four classrooms and an office was installed for $85,000 in 1961. An additional two classrooms and a connecting structure to the worship facility were added in 1985. The church established the school in 1950. It is currently in its current facility with 10 rooms. It has been in the same building for over 50 years. The school was originally in the building with four rooms, but has since added four more rooms and a new office. It now has 19 classrooms. The building has a capacity of more than 1,000 students. The Catholic school is in the city limits, and the Lutheran school is located in the Township. The Lutheran school was established in 1896, and is now in its present facility with ten rooms, as of 2006.

Religion

Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church originated when a priest came to give mass on May 25, 1887. The first church site was acquired in 1905, and a frame building occupied the site. The Northville and Plymouth parishes split in 1922. A $226,000 church facility opened in the fall of 1956. In 1961 an addition worth $35,000 was put in the convent. Another rectory was installed in the period from 1967 through 1968. There is also a Methodist Church, two Presbyterian Churches, and many more. The church is located in the town of Northville, New Hampshire, about 50 miles north of New York City. The church was founded in 1887 by a priest who gave mass on the 25th anniversary of the Civil War. It is still in use today, with a congregation of about 2,000 people. It also has a convent, a rectory, and several other buildings. It was built in the early 1950s, and the current church building was completed in the late 1960s. It has been in the same location since the 1970s, when it was built for $200,000. It now has a membership of about 1,200 people, and is located on a site that was once part of the Northville-Plymouth Turnpike, about 30 miles from the town center. It's located on the north side of the Turnpikes, about 10 miles from Northville. The Church was built on the site of a former dairy farm.
