Shell Lake is a city in Washburn County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,347 at the 2010 census. The city took its name from nearby Shell Lake. The mayor is the son of former mayor of the same name, who died in a car accident in 2009. The town has a population of 1,309, with 594 households, and 357 families residing in the city in 2010. The average household size was 2.16, with the average family size of 2.69, and the median age was 46.1 years. The racial makeup of the town was 97.7% White, 0.1% African American, 1.2% Native American,0.3% Asian, and 0.5% from other races. The percentage of Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.99% of the population. The median income for the city was $3333, with a family income of $917.4.

History

A post office called Shell Lake has been in operation since 1880. The city took its name from nearby Shell Lake. The post office has been closed and replaced by a new one. The new post office opened on July 1, 2013. The name Shell Lake was taken from the nearby lake. The current name of the post office is Shell Lake, which means "Shell Lake" or "Shell" in the local language. The town's name was changed to Shell Lake in the 1930s. It was named after the nearby town of Shell Lake which was also named for the lake.
