Harvard is a city in McHenry County, Illinois. The population was 9,469 at the 2020 census. The city is 63 miles from the Chicago Loop and it is the last stop on the Union Pacific/Northwest Line. It is the self-proclaimed Milk Capital of the World and hosts one of the longest-running Milk Days festivals in the world. In 2016, Xiao Hua "Edward" Gong, who was born in China but resides in Toronto, purchased the former Motorola plant. In December 2017, prosecutors in Canada and New Zealand alleged that the plant was part of a money laundering scheme and fraud involving Chinese citizens purchasing securities valued at hundreds of millions of dollars and supported by firms in New Zealand. In 2006, Harvard held a year-long Sesquicentennial Celebration. The Greater Harvard Area Historical Society is located on Hart Street. It identifies and marks historical sites in the area. It also works to obtain histories of Harvard families, businesses, and farms that have been in operation for more than 100 years. In the 2010 census, Harvard has a total area of 858 square miles (22.22 km²), all land. The US Census treats the Hispanic/Latino category as an ethnic category in the 2020 Census. It has a population of 8,469, all land, all of which is land. It was named in honor of Harvard, Massachusetts, which was the site of the first U.S. Civil War battle. History

The plant employed more than 5,000 at its peak in 1997. However, a combination of factors, including a significant decline in Motorola's business in the early 2000s, compelled the company to shutter the facility in 2003. In August 2008, the 1.5 million square foot facility was sold to Optima International's Optima Ventures, LLC a Miami-based real estate investment firm led by Chaim Schochet and 2/3rd owned by the Ihor Kolomoyskyi associated Privat Group, one of Ukraine's largest business and banking groups from 2003 to 2016. The building was destroyed in a fire on December 22, 1960.

Geography

According to the 2010 census, Harvard has a total area of 8.58 square miles (22.22 km²), all land. Major streets include Airport Road, Ayer Street, Diggins Street, Marengo Street, Division Street, Oak Grove Road, Flat Iron Road, and Ramer Road. Harvard is home to the Harvard Crimson, the Harvard Bruins, and the Harvard women's basketball team. The Harvard Crimson was founded in 1781 by William Harvard, the first president of Harvard University, and his son, William Harvard III, the third president of the University of Harvard. Harvard was named after Harvard's founder, William Henry Harvard, who was born in 1776. The university was named for Harvard's first president, William Alexander Harvard, and is located on Harvard Square, which was once the site of the Harvard Medical School. It is also known as the Harvard Business School, after which it was named. It was founded by Harvard's son William Alexander, who became president in 1782. It has been known as Harvard University since 1781, when it was founded. The current president, Harvard Harvard William Harper, was elected to his first term in 1987. He was re-elected to his second term in 1998. Harvard has been named after William Harvard. It also has been called Harvard University or Harvard College, after the Harvard Law School, which dates back to 1781. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 37.81% of the population. Education

Harvard School District No. 50 operates five schools within the city. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockford operated one school in Harvard. St. Joseph's School: pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and grades 18 was closed at the end of the 201516 school year. The school was closed due to financial issues. The district also operates Washington School: Pre-K and ECE, and Jefferson Elementary School: grades 4 and 5 and grades 6-8. The city is home to the University of Illinois at Chicago, which was founded in 1876. The university is located in the heart of the city, and has a campus that opened in 1883. The town has a population of about 2,000, with the majority of its residents living in the central part of the town. It is located on the banks of the Chicago River, which runs through the city's downtown area. It also has a lake, the Harvard River, and a river, which the city uses for its water supply and water treatment. Post office

The U.S. Post Office is located on Harvard's North Eastman Street. The current building was constructed during the Kennedy Administration in 1962 when J. Edward Day was the Postmaster General. It is located in a former post office building that was built in the 1930s and 1940s. The building is on the corner of Eastman and Harvard Streets. It was built during the JFK Administration in the 1960s and 1970s. It has been in the same location since 1962 when Day was postmaster general.

Law enforcement

The Harvard Police Department is located in the lower level of the old City Hall building at 201 W. Front Street. It consists of 17 full-time police officers, led by Chief of Police Tyson Bauman. Dispatch services are provided by the North East Regional Communications Center, also known as NERCOM, of which the department is a founding and partner member. The department has a full- time detective, a school resource officer, bicycles for officers to patrol the city streets, parks and downtown area. It also has a record clerk and a community services officer (CSO) The department is part of the Illinois Police Chiefs Association, which is a member of the National Association of Chiefs of Police (NACP) and the Illinois State Police Association (ISP). It is a non-profit organization based in McHenry, Illinois. It was founded by the NACP in the early 1990s to provide police services in the state. It has been in existence since the early 1900s. It is one of the oldest police departments in Illinois, along with the Chicago Police Department and the Springfield Police Department. The police department was founded in the late 1800s and has been around since the mid-19th century. It currently has 17 officers, including a detective and a CSO, and a school Resource Officer (SRO). Harvard's Fire Protection District consists of 47 trained firefighters, of which 22 are Emergency medical technicians and 14 are paramedics. It is part of the Mercy Health EMS System, which operates out of Mercy Health Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford, IL, a Level I trauma hospital. The Harvard Rescue Squad was founded in 1956 with a $7000 donation from the Harvard Jaycees. In 1971, the City and Rural Fire Department merged to form the Harvard Fire protection District. The Fire District is governed by a five-member board of trustees appointed by the McHenry County Board. While the Fire District works very closely with the city of Harvard, it is a separate government agency and is funded by ambulance user fees and property taxes. In 1899, the first constitution and by-laws were drawn up for the Harvard fire department. The first fire engine was sent to Chicago via the railroad to assist in the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. In 1892, it was again placed on a train to assist with a fire in the community of Kenosha, Wisconsin. This team is part the Mc Henry County MABAS 5 Dive Team. The team is trained forWater Rescue and is a member of the Merriman Health EMS system, which is a Level II trauma hospital, with a Level 1 trauma center. It has a dive team.

Transportation

U.S. Route 14, locally known as the Northwest Highway and Division Street, runs northsouth through Harvard. Illinois Route 23 begins in southern Harvard and connects the city with other locations to the south. Metra's Union Pacific/Northwest Line has a station in Harvard and operates daily service to Chicago's Ogilvie Transportation Center. The Harvard station is the most remote point in the Metra system at 63.16 miles (101.65 km) from downtown Chicago. Pace operates Route 808 in Harvard. This route links the city to the communities of Woodstock and Crystal Lake. The nearest Interstate Highway to Harvard is Interstate 90 in Belvidere; Interstate 39 in Machesney Park is also nearby, as is Interstate 43 in Wisconsin.
