Chesterfield is a city in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 49,999, making it the state's fourteenth-largest city. Chesterfield is known to have been a site of Native American inhabitation for thousands of years. A site in western Chesterfield containing artwork and carvings has been dated as 4,000 years old. The broader valley of Chesterfield was originally referred to as "Gumbo Flats", derived from its soil, which though very rich and silty, resembled gumbo when wet. On January 24, 1967, a violent F4 tornado ripped a 21-mile (34 km) path of destruction across St.Louis County. The tornado developed near the Chesterfield Manor nursing home and then moved through River Bend Estates and across northeast St Louis County. For many years, "Cheterfield" was an all-inclusive place-name for a vast sub-region of western St. louis County. As the population grew, Chesterfield grew, and other commercial and retail developments sprang up in the western part of the county. An unincorporated area of the city is listed above containing the uninc incorporated historical communities listed above plus areas now incorporated as cities of their own (e.g., Ballwin and Ballwin Ballwin). The city's name was changed from Chesterfield to Chesterfield by the city council in the 1950s. The city was named after a former resident of the area, who moved to the area in the 1960s.

History

Chesterfield is the primary city name, but also Town And Country, Twn And Cntry are acceptable city names or spellings, Clarkson Valley on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. Chesterfield was once an all-inclusive place-name for a vast, unincorporated sub-region of western St.Louis County (called "West County" by metro area residents) The present-day city is made up of several smaller historical communities, including Bellefontaine, Monarch, Gumbo, Lake and Bonhomme. The town of Lake started out as "Hog Hollow," in about 1850, and the post office was established as Hog Hollow in 1871, but a year later the town's name was changed to what some thought was the more suitable name of Lake. After a number of failed votes for incorporation, Chesterfield became a city in 1988. The city was incorporated as Chesterfield in 1988 by a group called the "Chesterfield Incorporation Study Committee," led by former president of the River Bend Association, John Nuetzel. It was the fourth-worst tornado to hit the St. louis metro area and the most recent F4 Tornado tohit the city. The population of Chesterfield has grown to more than 100,000, making it one of the fastest growing cities in the United States.

Geography

Chesterfield is located approximately 25 miles (40 km) west of St. Louis. The city has a total area of 33.52 square miles (86.82 km²), of which 31.78 sq miles (82.31 km²) is land and 1.74sq miles (4.51km) is water. Chesterfield Valley is located in the floodplain of the Missouri River. It is the location of the longest outdoor strip mall in America. The area was submerged during the Great Flood of 1993 and has since been redeveloped for commercial use. The airport is used for corporate aviation and is the longest in the U.S. to be open to the public. It was once known as Gumbo Flats, formerly known as Chesterfield Flats. It has been named after Chesterfield, Missouri, where the city was once located. The current airport was built in the 1960s and is located on the former site of the Gumboflats site, which was submerged in the 1993 Great Flood. Native American, 14.4% Asian, 1.2%, other races, and 5.4%. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.5% of the population. The median income for a household was $95,006, and the median family income was $88,568. About 1.7% of families and 4.0% of residents were below the poverty line. The city's population is expected to rise to 49,999 by the 2020 census. It is located on the banks of the Red River. The Red River is a tributary of the Mississippi River, which runs through the city's downtown area. The river is a popular tourist destination. It has been the site of several U.S. presidential campaigns. The U.N. World Cup is held in the area. It also hosts the Winter Olympics. It was also the location of the Winter Paralympic Games, which began in 2010. The Winter Olympics are scheduled to take place in the summer of 2020. The games will be held at the University of Wisconsin-Elysees, which is also home to the Winter Olympic Games. It will be the first Winter Olympics to be held in New York City since the 1988 Winter Games. The Games will take place at the New York Harbor.

The highest rate of poverty is 2 per cent and the lowest is 1 per cent for a single family home. The City's economy is estimated to have grown by 1.6 per cent over the past five years. The economy is expected to grow by 2.8 per cent by the end of the year, and 1.9per cent in 2015. The population is estimated at 1.7 million.

Arts and culture

St. Louis County Library Samuel C. Sachs Branch is in Chesterfield. The branch is a branch of the St. Louis Public Library system. The library was established in 1872 and is the oldest branch in the county. It was named for Samuel Sachs, who was a member of Congress in the early 20th century.
