Maryland Heights is a second-ring north suburb of St. Louis. The population was 27,472 at the 2010 census. The city was incorporated in 1985. It is governed by a mayor who serves a four-year term and a city council made up of eight members. Two council-people are elected from each ward to serve on the city council for two-year terms. Maryland Heights is located at 38°4310N 90°2651W (38.719551, 90.447467). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 23.35 square miles (60.48 km²), of which 21.83 sq miles (56.54 km²) is land and 1.52sq miles (3.94 km²") is water. In 2020, there were 28,284 people living in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 85.35% White, 5.58% African American, 0.20% Native American, 7.11% Asian and 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.02% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. The city is located on the eastern edge of the Chesapeake Bay, which is a tributary of the Potomac River. It is the only city in the state of Maryland to be on the National Register of Historic Places. It has a population of 1,856,000 (1,854,000 in 2010). The city's population was 1,788,000 at the time of the 2010 Census. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the city's total area to be 23.3 square miles, or 60.4 km². It also has a land area of 21.35square miles (56.54 km²), or 21.3 km², of which 1.54square miles is water, or 3.94km². The town is located in the eastern part of the state, on the east side of the Cuyahoga River, which runs through the city. It was founded in 1838 and is one of the oldest cities in the country.
