Tarkio was platted in 1880 and incorporated in 1881. The name is from a Native American word meaning "place where walnuts grow" Tarkio is located at 40°2628N 95°2258W. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.39 square miles (3.60 km²), all land. The population of the city was 1,506 at the 2020 census, and is expected to rise to 1,500 by the end of the decade. The city was founded by Charles E. Perkins in 1880, and grew rapidly. One of the community's most famous landmarks was the Tarkia Mule Barn, an octagonal brick structure built in the early 1890s. It was on the National Register of Historic Places, but the building was destroyed in a 1989 fire.Rankin Hall and the Walnut Inn are listed on theNational Register of historic Places. The town is located in Atchison County, Missouri, and has a population of 1,583. The 2010 census showed that the city had a median age of 45.9 years, with 48.3% male and 51.7% female. History

Tarkio was founded by Charles E. Perkins in 1880, and grew rapidly. By 1900, the U.S. Census shows 2,845 persons living in Tarkio. One of the community's most famous landmarks was the Tarkie Mule Barn, an octagonal brick structure built in the early 1890s. It was on the National Register of Historic Places, but the building was destroyed in a 1989 fire.Rankin Hall and the Walnut Inn are listed on theNational Register of historic Places. The Tarkia MuleBarn Theatre was converted to the Tarksio College Theatre in the 1990s, which was used by the college until the theatre was destroyed by a fire in 1989. The Walnuts Inn was built in 1894, and is listed as a National Historic Landmark. It is also on the Register of National Historic Places and is known as the "Walnut Inn" It was built on the site of the former Walnut House, which once stood on the banks of the San Francisco Bay. It has since been converted into a hotel and restaurant, and has been a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. The town has a population of around 2,000. The U.N. World Heritage Site is located in the town, and was declared a World War II Memorial in 1966. The World War I Memorial was dedicated on July 4, 1918. The city's name is still used as a tourist destination, and the town is known for its red-wood architecture.

It is the only town in the state to be named after a U.S. president. It has a population of 2,000 people. It was founded in 1872 by the Spanish-American community of the same name. It became a city in 1883, and was named after the town of Tarkia, in present-day Mexico. It also has a post office, which was established in 1878. In 1881, the town was named for the town's founder, who was born in Tarkiya, Spain. The current mayor of the city is a former mayor of that town, who served from 1881 to 1883. The U.N. World Heritage Site is located in the town, and is known as the "World Heritage Site" for being the only place in the world to have been named after an American president.

Education

Tarkio was home to Tarkio College, a private Presbyterian college founded in 1883. The college closed in 1991. Starting in 2012 the Alumni Association rented the Campus' Main building, Rankin Hall, and in September 2019, TARKio College Inc. was issued a Certificate of Operation from the Missouri Department of Higher Education. TTI offers technical certification courses for professionals in Plumbing, Wind Energy, and Welding. The Atchison County Library is a branch of the TarkIO Branch Library. The library is open to the public on weekdays and on the weekends. It is located on the second floor of the Atchisons County Library, which is on the third floor of a building on the east side of the town. The branch is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the exception of Monday and Tuesday, when the library is closed for the day. It has a branch in the town's downtown area, on the fourth floor. The public library is located in the downtown area of the city. The town has a public library on the fifth floor of its building, which has the same name as the library in the neighboring town of Atchinson. The city's public library has the second highest circulation in the state, behind the city's library. It was established in 1881 and is the oldest public library in Missouri. It serves the city of Tarkia. It opened its first branch in 1882. It closed its last branch in 1998.
