According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.26 square miles (3.26 km²), all land. Clever's first documented population in the U.S. Census was 248 in 1910. Its population doubled from 580 to 1,010 between 1990 and 2000. It is part of the Springfield, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of the city was 2,139 at the 2010 census. The city is located in Christian County and is located near the intersection of Old Wire Road and the Missouri Pacific Railroad. The first post office was established in the store in 1896 with Frank Netzernow the store's proprietoras postmaster. When the first choice for a post office name was rejected by the Federal government, Mr. Netzer surveyed customers and one, Tom Lentz, suggested "Clever" because the young community's residents were friendly and wise. A 300-foot deep well was drilled for community use and operated by a small gasoline engine until electricity came to Clever in 1928. Through the first half of the 20th century Clever's population remained relatively stable around 500 residents.

Clever is located on the Springfield Plateau of the Missouri Ozarks, 14.5 miles (23.3 km) southwest of Springfield at an elevation of 1,398 feet (426 m) The town lies in the western panhandle of Christian County, just south of Missouri Highway 14 between Nixa and Billings. The town of Republic and the Wilson's Creek National Battlefield are approximately six miles to the north and northeast. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.26 square miles (3.26 km²), all land. The city is home to the Clever High School, which was founded in 1903. The school was the first in the state to graduate from high school. It was also the first high school in Missouri to graduate with a bachelor's degree. The high school is now part of the University of Missouri-St. Louis, with a total population of 2,788. The university has a history of more than 100 years, including the founding of the school in 1803. It is located in Christian County and the Ozarks National Park, which is located to the northeast of Clever. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the city's population at 2,071. The area has a land area of  1.26 square miles (3 26 km²), including 1.3 square miles (2.4 sq mi) of land that is land and water.

History

Clever is a small town in Christian County, Missouri. It is located on the Old Wire Road, which was used by the Butterfield Overland Mail from 1858 to 1861. A Civil War battle took place nearby in 1861. Clever's first documented population in the U.S. Census was 248 in 1910. Between 1990 and 2000 the population nearly doubled from 580 to 1,010., and then more than doubled between 2000 and 2010. On May 4, 2003 a series of tornadoes passed by the outer reaches of the town. The tornado outbreak resulted in major damage, and one person was killed. The town has a population of 2,139, making it the second largest town in the state of Missouri. The population of Lincoln Township, Missouri was 2,038 in the 2010 U.N. Census. The city's population was 1,071 in the 2000 U.n. Census, and 1,084 in the 2012 U.K. Census and 2,082 in the 2013 U.P. Census and 2,093 in the 2014 U. S. Census & Census Nomination Nominations Nominees for the town's first post office were: Tom Lentz and Frank Netzernow. The first choice for a post office name was rejected by the Federal government, but one of the residents suggested "Clever" because the young community's residents were friendly and wise. It was at this same time the plat for Clever was officially surveyed and laid out.

The racial makeup of the city was 2028 (96.3%) White, 7 (0.3%), African American, 1.1% Native American, 0.3% from other races, and 30 (2.0%) from two or more races. In the city, the population was spread out, with 31.4% under the age of 18, 6.6%. from 18 to 24, 35.0%. from 25 to 44, 15.8%. from 45 to 64, and 11.2%. who were 65 years of age or older.

City government

The City of Clever has four alderman, each elected for a two-year term on a nonpartisan basis. The city provides a small police department for public safety, which is led by Chief Jeff Lofton. Fire protection is provided for the city and surrounding rural areas by the Clever Fire Protection District, a volunteer department. The mayor is Dale Maisel who was first elected in June 2020. The City Clerk is Kristy Keithley who serves as the City Clerk for the City of Clever and the County of Lancaster, Wyoming, and the County of Phenix City, Mississippi, in Missouri in the state of Sylvania. The City of Clever has a population of 2,000, with the majority of its residents living in the east and west wards of the city. It has a mayor and a city council of four members, each of whom are elected for two years. It also has a fire protection district, which provides fire protection for the city and surrounding rural  areas of the county, as well as the city's council of four members for two years, and a mayor-elect for one year, Dale Maisel, who was first elected in June 2020. It is the first city in the state to have a mayor elected on a nonpartisan basis.

Education

The first school building in Clever was constructed in 1909. Merges with several small rural districts in the mid-20th century led to the creation of the current Clever R-V (5) school district. The district now provides pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade education to the community and rural portions of Christian County. In 201011 school year, there were 1,119 students enrolled in the CleverR-V school district, with 1,071 students in pre-school through high school. The school district is part of the Missouri Valley School District, which also includes the towns of Blooming Grove and Taylor, and the town of Piedmont, in the state's eastern half. It is the only school district in the county that does not have its own elementary or middle school. It also has its own high school, which was established in 1920. The current high school was built in 1931. It was the first high school in Christian County to be built in a brick building, and it was the only one of its kind in the country. It opened in the Spring of 1931. A fire in the spring of 1931 destroyed the building, however, a larger two-story brick building was built for the following school year. The new school was completed in the Fall of that year. It now serves as the center of the district's elementary and middle school programs. The high school is located in the town's central business district, one half mile north of Clever. It has a total enrollment of 1,117 students.
