Herington is a city in Dickinson and Morris counties in the U.S. state of Kansas. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 2,109. The city has a total area of 5.09 square miles (13.18 km²), of which, 5.06 square miles is land and 0.03 square mile (0.08 km²) is water. Herington was named after its founder, Monroe Davis Heredton. The first post office in Heringon was established in February 1884. The town is located on the banks of the Missouri and Kansas rivers, which flow into the Kansas River. It is located near the junction of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers, which flows into the Missouri River. The river is also known as the "Mississippi River" and the "Illinois River" The city is located at the intersection of the Illinois and Missouri rivers, and the Illinois River flows through the city. The population is 2,526, with 1,300 housing units at an average density of 256.9 per squaremile (99.2/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 93.3% White, 0.4% African American,0.5% Asian, 1.7% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. History

Herington is the primary city name, but also Delavan, Latimer are acceptable city names or spellings. Herington was named after its founder, Monroe Davis Herington. The American Discovery Trail passes through the town. The National Old Trails Road, also known as the Ocean-to-Ocean Highway, was established in 1912. In World War II, Heringon Army Airfield was built and was one of only two fields that processed heavy bombardment crews and equipment staging to the coasts for overseas duty. The field was later turned over to the City of Heredton and is currently used as a municipal airport. The first post office in Heringtons was opened in February 1884. In 1887, the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway built a main line from Topeka to Heringpton. The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway, which shut down in 1980, merged in 1988 with Missouri Pacific Railroad, and merged in 1997 with Union Pacific Railroad. Most locals still refer to this railroad as the "Rock Island", and the line is called the "Golden State Limited" and the "Oklahoma,Kansas and Texas Railroad" It is also called "The Golden State" or "TheGolden State" in some areas of the U.S. It is the first town in the state to be named after a man who was born Davis Monroe Herrington, but later dropped the second "r" from his last name. The town's name was changed to "Heringon" in 1887 by Mr. Herrington to avoid confusion with the town of Herrington in Scotland, which was also named after Davis Monroe.

Geography

The Kansas Historical Marker of Dwight David Eisenhower is approximately 1 mi (1.6 km) south of the city. In 2012, the Eisenhower marker replaced the previous "Father Juan De Padilla And Quivira" marker. Local attractions include the Heringon Historical Museum and the Kansas Museum of Natural History. The city is located on the Kansas River, which runs through the center of the town. It is located near the intersection of the Kansas Turnpike and Interstate 70. The town's nickname is "Herington" and the town's name is derived from the name of a former town in the state. It has a population of 2,000, with the majority of its residents living in or near the town center. It was founded in 1872 by German-born German-American immigrants, who came to the U.S. in the 19th century. The current mayor is the son of German-Americans, who moved to the state in the early 20th century to escape the Nazis.
