Alto is an unincorporated community in Lincoln County, New Mexico, United States. Alto received its name from the Spanish word "high" because of its elevation. Alto Lakes is a planned, residential and recreational community covering 1689+ acres along two mountain ridges in Alto. The heart of the community is the Alto Lakes Golf & Country Club which includes two private 18-hole golf courses, dining, swimming and tennis facilities. The community includes 1,150+ homes, 83 town homes, and approximately 1,000 vacant lots. Alto is located at an elevation of 7,550 feet (2,300 m) in the Lincoln National Forest, five miles (8.0 km) north of the village of Ruidoso. It is governed by the Alto Lake Water & Sanitation District and by the Palo Lakes Special Zoning District as well as community covenants. The town of Alto is home to the Sierra Blanca Regional Airport, located approximately 7 miles (11 km) west of Alto. It has two major highways: New Mexico State Road 48 and State Road 220. It also has a small airport, located at the base of the Santa Catalina Mountains near the town of La Jolla. It was founded in 1967 by Don Blaugrund and is located in the heart of Alto Lakes, a planned community that was conceived and developed in 1967. The community is governed by the Palo Lakes water and sanitation district and the Alto lake water and sanitation district. It is located on 1689+ acres along two mountain ridges in Alto, New Mexico. It has a population of 2,000. The town of Alto is located in the central part of the state, about 30 miles (50 km) northeast of the city of Albuquerque. The city of Alto has a total population of 3,000 (including 1,200 single-family homes) and 1,300 town homes. The population of Alto Lakes is 2,100 (including 83 town houses) and 2,300 vacant lots in Alto.

Airports are located at Sierra Blanca, Alto, and Santa Fe. The airport is located at an elevation of 7,000 feet (2,000 m) above sea level. It is located near the town of Alto, about 8 miles (13 km) from the town's central business district. It has a total of three runways, one of which is a direct runway. It also has two runways with a total length of 8.5 miles (14 km) The airport has a runway that is approximately 7,500 feet (1,800 meters) in length. It was built in the 1950s and is located in the town’s central part of the town. It opened in the 1960s and has an airport that is currently located at a height of 4,000ft (1.2 km) and has a terminal that can handle a wide variety of airliners. It's located at the base of a mountain, which is approximately 2,400 feet (600 meters) above the ground. The runway is also known as the “Canyon of the Mountains”. It’ is located on the east side of the Sierra Blancas and is the only airport in the area that is open to the public. The town has a number of smaller airports, including one that is a short distance from Alto.
