Ashburn is a census-designated place (CDP) in Loudoun County, Virginia, United States. At the 2010 United States Census, its population was 43,511, up from 3,393 twenty years earlier. It is 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Washington, D.C., and part of the Washington metropolitan area. Ashburn was originally called "Farmwell" after a nearby mansion of that name owned by George Lee III. The Ashburn CDP is bordered to the north by the Belmont, Lansdowne, One Loudoun, and University Center CDPs; to the east by the Kincora, Dulles Town Center, and Sterling C DPs; and to the west by the Goose Creek Village CDP. The median household income as of 2009 was $100,719, and the median age in Ashburn is 31.6 years old. Some 42 percent of Ashburn's population holds a four-year bachelor's degree; 18 percent holds a graduate degree. The area is drained by Broad Run, which flows northward through the eastern part of. the CDP toward the Potomac River. Many of its residents commute into Washington, DC. and the surrounding suburbs such as Tysons Corner and Reston to their places of employment. The average home value is $345,000, and many high school students have a high school degree or more. The majority of the high school graduates have a bachelor's or higher degree.


Ashburn is the primary city name, but also Brambleton, Broadlands are acceptable city names or spellings. Ashburn was originally called "Farmwell" after a nearby mansion of that name owned by George Lee III. A section of Farmwell plantation west of Ashburn Road, a 580-acre (230 ha) tract, was purchased in 1841 as a summer home by John Janney. Janney called the property "Ashburn Farm"; the name's first known appearance in writing is 1870 when he sold the property. It is likely he named the property after family friends whose name was Ashburn. The Ashburn Presbyterian Church, the Belmont Manor House, the Broad Run Bridge and Tollhouse, and Janelia Farm are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Ashburn is the site of the U.S. Civil War Battle of Gettysburg, which took place in 1864. The Battle was followed by the Civil War, which ended in 1865. The battle was won by the Confederate States of America, and the battle was fought at Gettysburg's Gettysburg Battlefield, which is now known as the Gettysburg National Cemetery. The battlefield is now home to the National Museum of American History, which opened in 1869. The National Museum's collection of Civil War battlefields includes the battlefields from Gettysburg and the Battle of the Bulge, as well as other battlefields. The site is also home to a number of historic buildings, including the Ashburn House, which was built in 1859. The U.N. Embassy in Washington, D.C. is located on the grounds of the National Park Service.


Ashburn is located in eastern Loudoun County at 39°0237N 077°2915W (39.0437192, 77.4874899) It is 7 miles (11 km) southeast of Leesburg, the county seat, and the same distance north of Dulles International Airport. The Ashburn CDP is bordered to the north by the Belmont, Lansdowne, One Loudoun, and University Center CDPs. The area is drained by Broad Run, which flows northward through the eastern part of the CDP toward the Potomac River. The CDP consists of many major and minor subdivisions such as Ashbrook, Ashburn Farm, and Ashburn Village. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the Ash Burn CDP has a total area of 15.55 square miles (40.27 km²) of which 15.30 square miles are land and 0.25 sq miles (0.65km²) is water. It is also bordered by the Kincora, Dulles Town Center, and Sterling C DPs; to the southwest by the Moorefield and Broadlands CDPS; and to the west by the Goose Creek Village CDP. As drawn by the U.S. Census Bureau, the area counted as "Ashburn" extends north to Virginia State Route 7, east to Virginia state Route 28, and southwest to the Dulles Greenway (VA 267). The area counted by the Census Bureau as " Ashburn" includes the town of Ashburn, Virginia.


The United States Census Bureau defines Ashburn as a census-designated place (CDP) As of the 2010 census, the CDP had a population of 43,511 residents, while the larger ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA) for Ashburn's 20147 ZIP code contained 54,086 people. The population is made up of 49% males and 51% females. The median household income as of 2009 was $100,719. 98% percent of Ashburn residents have a high school degree. Some 42 percent of the population holds a four-year bachelor's degree; 18 percent holds graduate degrees. The total number of households accounted for in Ashburn was 22,555, with a median household size of 2.9 persons. The average household income in the Ashburn CDP is $100.719, and the median age is 31.6 years. Ashburn is located in the D.C. suburbs of Tysons Corner and Reston. Many residents commute into Washington, D.c. and the surrounding suburbs to their places of employment. The CDP's population is 67.1% White, 8.2% Black or African American, 0.2%. Native American, 17.1%. Asian. Hispanic or Latino people of any race made up 11.8%. The median housing value is at $345,000, with an average age of 5.0 years. The majority of residents are homeowners, with 80 percent of households making up the population.


Ashburn is a major hub for data centers, largely due to the Equinix location there. Verizon Business has a major office in Ashburn at the location replacing MCI WorldCom's headquarters. The George Washington University's Virginia Science and Technology Campus and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Janelia Research Campus are located north of Ashburn in the University Center and Lansdowne CDPs, respectively. INOVA Sports Performance Center, the training camp for the Washington Commanders of the National Football League, is located in the east part of the city. EADS North America (the European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company), renamed Airbus Group, Inc., a defense contractor headed by former NASA administrator Sean O'Keefe, has a second location inAshburn in addition to the main office in Herndon, Virginia. The Wikimedia Foundation (parent of Wikipedia) and Amazon Web Services have data centers there. World Trade Center Dulles Airport is the second World trade Center in the state. Ashburn is also home to government contractor Telos. The Dulles Technology Corridor is home to many high-tech businesses, including Verizon Business, Telos, and the Washington Post. The Washington Post is based in the Ashburn area of Virginia. It is one of the largest newspapers in the U.S., with a circulation of more than 1.2 million. The city is home of the Washington Redskins, the Washington Wizards, the Redskins, and other sports teams. It has a population of 1.6 million.


The National Transportation Safety Board operates the Ashburn Aviation Field Office in Ashburn. It is the regional headquarters of the NTSB Aviation Eastern Region. The NTSB operates the following field offices in the U.S. state of Washington: Washington, D.C., Richmond, Virginia, and Ashburn, Texas. The field office is located in the former Ashburn Airport. The airport was the site of the World War II-era Ashburn Air Force Base, which was built in the 1930s. The Ashburn Field Office is located on the base's grounds, near the Washington Dulles International Airport, which opened in 1940. The base is also home to the National Air and Space Museum and the National Museum of American History, both of which are on the grounds of the Air Force Academy in Dulles, Virginia. The National Air Force Museum is also located at the base, and is home to a museum of aviation history, the National Gallery of America, which dates back to the early 20th century. The museum's collection of aviation memorabilia dates to the mid-19th century, when the first airmen were brought to the United States from Europe and the Middle East. It also contains the remains of several World War I-era aircraft, including the Wright brothers' C-47 and C-5 aircraft, which were shot down in the 1940s and 1950s. It was also the home of the Wright Brothers, who were involved in the creation of the Civil Air Patrol, which first flew over the area.


Loudoun County Public Schools operate schools in Ashburn. George Washington University and Strayer University have campuses in the area. In December 2009, George Mason University was planning to set up a campus in the Ashburn area. There are six private schools: Loudoun School for Advanced Studies, St. Theresa Catholic School, Virginia Academy, Leport School, The Loudoun Country Day School, and County Christian School. Ashburn's public middle schools include Eagle Ridge Middle School, Farmwell Station Middle School and Stone Hill Middle School. Public high schools include Briar Woods High School, Broad Run High School and Independence High School. There is also a private high school, Loudoun Christian School, which was founded in the 1970s. The Ashburn High School is located on the Dulles Greenway off Exit 6 of the Interstate 95 corridor. It is one of the largest high schools in Loudoun County, with more than 1,000 students. The school's mascot is a lion, and the school's colors are blue and white. The high school mascot is the lion, while the high school football team is the blue-and-white Ashburn Thunderbirds. The elementary schools include Ashburn Elementary School, Belmont Station Elementary School and Creighton's Corner Elementary School. The public high schools are Briar Run High and Broad Run Elementary and Mill Run Elementary. The middle schools are Belmont Ridge Middle and Farmwell station Middle. The secondary schools are Mill Run elementary and Moorefield Station Elementary, Mill Run High, and Stone Bridge High. The private schools are Loudoun Church Day School and The Loudou Country Day.


Ashburn is served by two Washington Metro Silver Line stations. The first stop in Ashburn is Loudoun Gateway station, with Ashburn station serving as the terminus. Ashburn's fire and emergency medical services are provided by a combination of the volunteers of Ashburn Volunteer Fire-Rescue Department and the Loudoun County Department of Fire, Rescue & Emergency Management. The Inova Ashburn Healthplex Emergency Room is located at the corner of the Dulles Greenway and Loudoun Co Parkway. Inova Loudoun Hospital is located less than 2 miles (3.2 km) from Ashburn in neighboring Lansdowne, and by larger hospitals in the Washington suburbs and city. The Ashburn area is also served by the 24-7 career Moorefield Station 23, which is the first of its kind in the county. It was originally planned to open in 2018, the opening was pushed back by multiple delays and finally opened on November 15, 2022. It is located next to Loudoun Hospitals in the Ashburn suburb of Lans Downe, Washington, D.C. It also has its own emergency room, located at Inova Healthplex at the intersection of Dulles Airport and Inova County Parkway. It will be the first emergency room of its type in the country when it is fully operational in 2023. It has a waiting list of more than 1,000 people for emergency care. The hospital's emergency room is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The emergency room can be reached by phone at 1-800-273-8255.
