Oregon was settled in 1841 by Bartlet Runey, and the first house was constructed in 1843. Initially the settlement was known as "Rome Corners," and there is a road south of the village which still bears that name. When the Chicago and North Western Transportation Company came through the village in 1864, their maps indicated a name of "Oregon," and the name was adopted. The village was incorporated in 1881. Oregon is located at 42°5526N 89°2256W (42.923899, 89.382304). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.49 square miles (11.63 km²) The village is served primarily by US-14 and Wisconsin Highway 138 and the two highways meet at the village's southeast corner. The Red Brick School, one of the more distinguishable structures in the village, built in 1922 as the high school, stands north of downtown. It was recently restored and now serves as the business offices for the Gorman Company. As of the census of 2020, the population was 11,179, with 4.0% Hispanic or Latino of any race. In 2010, there were 9,232 people, 3,589 households, and 2,527 families living in theVillage of Oregon. The population of Oregon is part of the Madison Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes the Town of Oregon and the City of Dane County. The median age in Oregon was 37 years.

History

Oregon is the primary city name, but also Fitchburg are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Oregon, Wisconsin. Oregon was settled in 1841 by Bartlet Runey, and the first house was constructed in 1843. Initially the village was known as "Rome Corners," and there is a road south of the village which still bears that name. When the Chicago and North Western Transportation Company came through the village in 1864, their maps indicated a name of "Oregon," and the name was adopted. Many of Oregon's historical buildings still stand in the downtown district, including the Netherwood Block on the south and the Badger Cycle Company building and original water tower on the southeast. The Red Brick School, one of the more distinguishable structures in the village, built in 1922 as the high school, stands north of downtown. It was recently restored and now serves as the business offices for the Gorman Company. The village was incorporated in 1881, and many of its buildings are still in use today, such as the Red Brick Block and Badger cycle company building on Janesville Street on the west side of Main Street.

Geography

A bypass was constructed from 1976 to 1978 along the northern and eastern sides of the village. The previous route is now signed as County Trunk MM. The village is located on the Wisconsin River, which flows through the village to the north and east. The river is a tributary of the U.S. state of Wisconsin, which is also known as the Wisconsin Dells. The Dells are home to the Dells Dam, which dates back to the 17th century. The town of Oregon was once part of the Wisconsin Territory, but was later annexed by the state in the 19th Century. It is located in the town of Waukesha, which was part of Wisconsin until the 20th century, when it was annexed by Wisconsin. The city of Oregon has a population of 2,000, with the majority of its residents living in or near the village center. It has a post office with the ZIP code of O'Hare, which serves the village until it was closed in the 1950s and 1960s. The post office reopened in the 1970s and is still in operation.

Education

The Oregon School District serves the area. Schools in the district include Brooklyn Elementary, Netherwood Knoll Elementary, Prairie View Elementary, Forest Edge Elementary, Rome Corners Intermediate, Oregon Middle School and Oregon High School. The district is located in the central part of the state. The school district was established in the early 1900s. It is one of the largest school districts in the state, with more than 2,000 students. It was once the largest district in the United States. It has since been reduced to about 1,500 students. The area is home to a number of small businesses, many of which have been forced to close due to lack of funding. It also has a large number of golf courses, which have helped the area's economy. The town has a population of about 3,000. The Oregon School district was formed in the late 1950s and has been in operation since the early 1960s.

Deer Park Buddhist Center and Monastery is located in Oregon. It is a Buddhist center and monastery. The center is located at the end of a road in the town of Vineyard.
