Verona is a city in Dane County, Wisconsin, in the United States. The population was 14,030 at the 2020 census. The city is located ten miles southwest of downtown Madison. It is part of the Madison Metropolitan Statistical Area. Verona used to be home to the Dane County Insane Asylum which opened in 1882, closed in 1973, and was demolished in 2006. It was previously a poor farm for people who needed care due to old age, blindness, disease, deformity, loss of limbs and insanity. The town was named for Verona, New York. Notable geographical features include the Verona Sugar River Valley, the Badger Mill Creek, and the Sugar River State Trail. On July 22, 2010, a tornado rated EF1 hit Verona. On June 9, 2011, an EF1 tornado struck Verona with winds peaking around 90 mph. On the night of June 16, 2014 an EF3 tornado tore through Country View Elementary School and surrounding neighborhoods. No one was hurt by the tornado and the school was rebuilt and remodeled before school started in the fall. A portion of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail also runs through Verona and is on the National Park Service map of Wisconsin. The area was also the site of a small leper colony sometime between 1890-1910.10 and 1890-1911, and it is now a dog park. The racial makeup of the city was 93.3% White, 1.3%. African American, 0.3. History

Verona is the primary city name, but also Fitchburg are acceptable city names or spellings. Verona used to be home to the Dane County Insane Asylum which opened in 1882, closed in 1973, and was demolished in 2006. It was previously a poor farm for people who needed care due to old age, blindness, disease, deformity, loss of limbs and insanity. The area was also the site of a small leper colony sometime between 1890-1910. and 1890-1911. It is now a dog park. The town was named for Verona, New York. The city was incorporated as a village in 1921 and as a city in 1978. It has a population of 2,000,000 and is located in the Finger Lakes region of New York and New Jersey. The mayor of Verona is Julian Zelizer, who was elected in 1978 and re-elected in 2010. The current mayor is John McWhorter, who has served as mayor since 2001. The village was incorporated in 1921, and the city was formed in 1978, and it is located near the town of Madison, New Jersey, which is in the East Coast region of the U.S. and the New Jersey Turnpike, which was founded in 1839. The county seat of Dane County, Dane County is located at the center of the town and was once the home of the Dane Country Insane asylum, which opened on August 1, 1882 and closed on August 2, 1973. The city is located on the banks of the Verra River, a tributary of the Missouri River. It is located near the junction of the Big Sioux and Little Sioux Rivers. The town has a population of 2,000.

Demographics

At the 2010 census there were 10,619 people, 4,223 households, and 2,845 families living in the city. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.09. Verona Public Library

In 2006, Verona opened a new public library. The Prairie School-style facility has views of Badger Prairie Park. The land for the new building was negotiated as a trade with Dane County for the installation of water pipes in the park. The library is located in the town of Verona, Wisconsin. The area is served by the Verona Area School District which includes the following schools: Verona High School, Country View Elementary School, New Century Charter School, Stoner Prairie Elementary School and Sugar Creek Elementary School. The district also has an international school, Verona International School. Verona is located on the Wisconsin-Illinois Turnpike, which runs through the town of Verona. The Verona area is part of the Wisconsin Dells-Milwaukee Metropolitan Statistical Area, which covers parts of Wisconsin, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The area is home to the Wisconsin Creamery Company, which was founded in 1883. The town is also home to a number of wineries, including Verona Creamery and Verona Winery. It is also the site of the annual Verona County Fair, which takes place in the fall and features a wide variety of activities for children and young adults. It was founded by the town's German-born residents in 1881. The community is known as the "Verona Corners" and was once known as "The Corners of the Dells" because of its cornfields.
